    3. Hello Shirley, It's a pity that you are basing your research for Michael COBEY born 1845 in Plymouth on one piece of information. It's a far too common error as there are countless people with the same name and the same birth year. The Michael who was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1865 was Irish and the son of Matthew and Mary. The proof lies in this Michael's 1851 emigration (Liverpool-New York) where he's clearly part of another family - all born in Ireland - who are also on the U.S. 1860 census living in downtown New York. He is the only foreign-born Michael Cobey (born during the 1840's) who appears on any U.S. census. He died 1879. Sorry you still have a mystery on your hands. He may have joined the Army or Navy or emigrated to another part of the world. As for a possible return to the UK, those on-line passenger lists don't begin until 1890 and he's not on them. Prior to that, there's no way of telling. cheers, pamela -----Original Message----- From: devon-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Shirley Ireland Sent: Monday, January 13, 2014 1:41 PM To: devon@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DEV] MICHAEL RICHARD COBEY OF PLYMOUTH Hi Pamela, I am looking for Mr Micheal Richard Cobey who went to the USA in 1865 form England, that is all I know and if he came back at a later date or married and had a family, l still do not know, I'm still in the dark.

    3. Just did a quick search in our old local papers and found: 1901 newspaper article mentions a Mr. Cobey helping with research on growing tobacco under tents in Connecticut. 1915 newspaper article mentions Mr. & Mrs. William Cobey of Philadelphia, Jefferson County, New York are guest of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Allen of Castorland, Lewis County, New York 1905- Watertown Reunion Newspaper, Watertown, New York- Alexandria Bay news mentions that Michael Cobey was in Brockville (Ontario,Canada) Sunday. Here is the link to search some of the old newspapers of the Northern Counties of New York State http://news.nnyln.net/ another newspaper search site is http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html good luck in your search- my relatives from Devon came to New York via the St. Lawrence River (it separates the NY/USA and Canada) so some went to Canada, some to the USA- C.Campany On 1/13/2014 10:19 PM, Pamela Willcocks wrote: > Hello Shirley, > > It's a pity that you are basing your research for Michael COBEY born 1845 in > Plymouth on one piece of information. > > It's a far too common error as there are countless people with the same name > and the same birth year. 3. Hope Shirley or any desc of the Plymouth-born Cobeys reading this in the Archives don't get their hopes up re these New York newspaper mentions. I saw a number of references on the Ancestry website to the Jefferson County Cobeys (father Patrick) or other U.S. States correlating to any 1840-decade Michaels. And all were Irish-born or born in the States they appeared in. To be fair, they may be related to the Daniel Cobey, Shirley's line - but it would a long way back as he was born in Suffolk C1795 and joined the British Army at age 18. (his full service record is on FindMyPast). Back to Michael of Plymouth as this list relates only to Devon roots. Unless he died after age 6 when he's last seen in Plymouth on the 1851 census and his demise has slipped through the cracks...he had left Devon or most likely England itself by the age of 16. He either joined the Army following his father, or with Plymouth being a major port, he may have hopped on a ship and ended up in the Far East or Africa. My suggestion to Shirley is to keep checking all search engines - not just google- and he or a descendant of his may show up one day. cheers, pamela -----Original Message----- From: devon-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of CC Sent: Monday, January 13, 2014 11:58 PM To: devon@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DEV] MICHAEL RICHARD COBEY OF PLYMOUTH Just did a quick search in our old local papers and found: 1901 newspaper article mentions a Mr. Cobey helping with research on growing tobacco under tents in Connecticut. 1915 newspaper article mentions Mr. & Mrs. William Cobey of Philadelphia, Jefferson County, New York are guest of Mr. and Mrs. C.E.
