My relishing the description "a bed layer for 16 years" was not because of poor Mrs Searle's achievement, but because of that old grammatical difficulty over the verbs Lie and Lay. "Lay" being transitive requires an object; here it's apparently being used as the past tense of lie, but it reads very awkwardly indeed. Something like "Bed lyer/lier" would be better, but the difficulties there are obvious.
