Thanks Terry That's interesting. I was basing my views on the fact that my grandmother who was as Devon as you could get tended to extended vowel sounds and "er" and "r's in a very distinctive way and the "r" was pronounced everywhere. I believe it was referred to as a Rhotic accent. Of course we must remember that in mid 1700s Devon villages were seldom touched by outside influences so when a new curate from say the Midlands or North of England arrived he pronounced things as he heard them.
