    3. Hi, Fascinating to see my 4x great grandmother Mary SEARLE being given an airing. Thanks Bev. I first saw the story about her being born on a Thursday, baptised on a Thursday and so on about 35 years ago in the Exeter Flying Post (I think it may have been a Thursday:-) ) and I can confirm it is accurately reported. For the record she was born Mary Perriam on Thursday 30th Jan 1775 at Rockbeare the daughter of John PERRIAM and Elizabeth LEIGHT. She married Thomas SARDLE on 16th Feb 1775 at Rockbeare and died 3rd Mar 1836 at Littleham (Exmouth). She was indeed disabled and effectively a bed "layer/lyer" for 16 years but I do not know why. This story gives me an opportunity to remember that as family historians we have to keep an open mind and it's not always modern day transcribers who make mistakes. I was searching for the birth of said Thomas SEARLE and any other children to Thomas and Elizabeth SEARLE who had hitherto been living in Woodbury. I knew from a family bible parchment that they lived in Rockbeare at some time and when I first looked through the Rockbeare registers all I could find were two children born to the couple but not my direct ancestor Thomas or any other siblings. I searched neighbouring parishes and eventually, armed with some dates which I had fortunately found in the family bible I returned to the Rockbeare registers and found the remainder of their children born to Thomas and Elizabeth SARDLE. Thomas had been baptised SEARLE in Woodbury and at his death in Exmouth he was described as SEARLE. So what happened in Rockbeare? When I looked through some other entries in the register at that time it seemed that there was a new vicar who was not from the Devon area and it was possible that when he heard "SEE-ARR-EL" in a deep Devon accent could only think it was spelt SARDLE. I doubt whether Thomas or Elizabeth ever had cause to see the registers - even if they could read and write- so they would not have known their surname had been wrongly inscribed. As other Searles will testify it's a name that many people seem to get wrong. 3. As a Devonian (admittedly not with a strong accent) I would pronounce the name as SERLE- completely ignoring the A in it. So in a strong accent it probably came out as Sarle. 3. Hello, Perhaps it’s time for another airing for my SEARLE ancestors now that Woodbury is being mentioned. I have John SEARLE bpt. Jan 1 1772 and his sister Agnes Hearne SEARLE bpt. Nov 23 1783 both in Woodbury. Their parents were William SEARLE and Molly Land HEARNE. I can’t find where William came from but Molly was b. Lympstone ca 1748 and they married there in 1771. There is an eleven year gap between the two children and looking at the Woodbury records I can’t find any children in between them. Did they move away for a time? Or did they just not have any children during those eleven years? They seem to have lived in Woodbury after Agnes’ birth - she was married there and her six children were born there - she was my 4xG grandmother. Although I’ve traced Agnes I’ve been unable to trace where her father William SEARLE came from or when he died and her brother John is also a complete mystery. Any ideas about this family would be very welcome. Are they perhaps related to your Woodbury SEARLEs Keith? Or should I be looking for a SARDLE family? 1. [DEV] Samuel SEARLE c 1720
    2. B. Edmonds
    3. Seeing as SEARLE is such a popular name in all parts of Devon [so it seems] I think it time that I ask if anyone has a Samuel SEARLE who married Margaret EDMONDS at Ashburton 14 Nov 1744. Samuel was a Miller of Ashburton when he married. The closest match would be the Samuel chr at Buckfastleigh 1 Oct 1700 s/o Thomas SEERLE. Has anyone made this connection? Bev

    3. Angela There is a Banns Notice in Dartington for William SEARLL of Rattery and Sally THOMAS of Dartington 6 Dec 1772 I do not know for sure where they married, but it is not in Dartington. Does anyone have their marriage from the DFHS Marriage Index please. The other William SEARLE I have is chr 20 Sep 1715 at Loddiswell s/o John & Grace of Dartington I then think they had a son John born 13 Apr 1718 Chr 6 May 1718 at Loddiswell Another son John was chr. 20 Sep 1720 at Loddiswell The Loddiswell info needs checking to see if the 1st son John was buried bef 1720 Bev -------------------------------------------------- From: "ag.hamilton" <ag.hamilton@vfast.co.uk> Sent: Thursday, January 02, 2014 6:43 AM To: <devon@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [DEV] Mrs SEARLE and Thursdays [bit of trivia] > Hello, > > Perhaps it’s time for another airing for my SEARLE ancestors now that > Woodbury is being mentioned. > > I have John SEARLE bpt.
