Thanks Joy - then he's not mine. Gittisham is definite for my guy. I have never been able to find him on familysearch which I use all the time. 1861 and 1871 - and after that - nothing! Sure, Maree - thanks - my Henry Hooper (to fill you in) is the baseborn son of Matilda Hooper of Gittisham - Matilda later married William Alford and left poor Henry behind with grandmother Mary Hooper in Gittisham (Matilda was only in Buckerell and Hamlet-Weston(Honiton west end)) - I can't imagine why my gg grandmother Matilda would do this - she proceeded to have 6 kids with Wm A., incl my g grandmother. My Henry Hooper was the baseborn son of Matilda Hooper of Gittisham - he lived all his life with his grandmother, Mary Hooper, in Gittisham - at least to the 1871 census after which he disappears (can't find a burial for him either in the parish records) - so maybe he up and left to Australia!
