Hi Guy, Nancy: From: Guy Lawton <guylawton@gmail.com<mailto:guylawton@gmail.com>> Subject: [DEV] Re: Devon Wills mentioned in publications Date: 14 October 2018 at 15:41:36 BST To: devon@rootsweb.com<mailto:devon@rootsweb.com> Reply-To: devon@rootsweb.com<mailto:devon@rootsweb.com> Re Nancy Frey's comment, a now lost will may not only be found *attached* to a document such as a lease but be quoted in its entirety *within* a document. In such a case the testator's name is unlikely to appear in any calendar let alone in an index, so you will be very lucky to come across one except by chance. My example was the will of Peter Battishill, mercer of Exeter made in January 1719 (New Style), which was quoted in a deposition in Chancery Proceeding C11 388/13 at TNA. I provided Devon RO with a copy of my transcript of the will to which they gave an accession reference 4667Z add/Z 2 so that it does now appear in their calendar. In a similar fashion, in another legal dispute I also came across a quotation of an 16th century Devon Parish Register entry - the Register is now lost and of course at that time there were no Bishop's Transcripts! You never know your luck! Richard Grylls and I therefore encourage you - indeed everybody - when you come across a copy, transcript, abstract or extract of a pre-1857 Devon Will (or Admon or Inventory), in a “non-standard” source, to check whether it is already listed in the Devon Wills Project Database (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.genuki.org.uk_big_eng_DEV_DevonWillsProject_&d=DwIGaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=_kHYb0dMtukKdTNCoURit9Z6fYN0hak3I3SjPWTU2FA&m=u-_4qg5OzmiTkm6wKJuL-latBWmblSKrUf9qbiH_dVQ&s=lDmjARGOsLADNfyZcYTXLegmWUl8q-XbEU5GIoHgEc4&e=, or the Findmypast version of DWP, and to let us have full details if it isn’t. 3. Hi Brian, I too have found a few and sending them to you are on a 'to do' list. (I hadn't thought, though, of supplying to the DHC so will now also do that). You say to check the DWP to see whether already listed, I assume you would like another ref. if 'better', e.g. one of 'to dos' is for a Chancery case with a full transcript where the DWP only shows a ref to an abstract (which I haven't seen, so I don't know how much the transcript adds). You also say 'when you come across a copy, transcript, abstract or extract'. The DWP contains many entries that are less than this - e.g. the many calendar entries. So would you also like references to wills, where there isn't so much as an extract? (Personally, I would hope so because I do find the calendar entries useful and could also find such references that others have found useful). I have several Chancery cases I am looking at where there are references but unfortunately without so much as an  abstract or extract, let alone a transcript.
