    3. Hi Jane: If you look at the Devon Wills Project main page (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.genuki.org.uk_big_eng_DEV_DevonWillsProject&d=DwIGaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=_kHYb0dMtukKdTNCoURit9Z6fYN0hak3I3SjPWTU2FA&m=v64jhLH3Mc0VPHzhnsOq2SzLA9K7TvJLxHId7BfsKuI&s=Taas3Y5rUXzQtD-27gQ68jmJCPHpja5WUMRtbN2djgw&e=) you’ll see a listing of the large variety of sources we ransacked for wills - see in particular the subsidiary list “Miscellaneous Minor Sources” - https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.genuki.org.uk_big_eng_DEV_DevonWillsProject_MiscSources&d=DwIGaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=_kHYb0dMtukKdTNCoURit9Z6fYN0hak3I3SjPWTU2FA&m=v64jhLH3Mc0VPHzhnsOq2SzLA9K7TvJLxHId7BfsKuI&s=uLqO116zMqq_UJMVOEidGiVhsEfhdzHOiENxYvtOxSc&e= Needless to say, we’d be interested to learn of sources that we don’t already list as having been searched. Cheers Brian On 13 Oct 2018, at 09:55, Jane Lucas via DEVON <devon@rootsweb.com<mailto:devon@rootsweb.com>> wrote: The previous thread re Devon Wills ... has got me thinking. There is a family history (surname Caunter) publication from 1930 held at DA in which extracts of Caunter Wills are transcribed, one as early as 1548. I believe, from remarks made by the author, that he has seen the originals, some held at the Exeter Registry. Presumably those went up in flames. I’ve used that book (with caution) to construct part of my Caunter tree and it has been extremely useful. There must be similar sources to be found for other families. But I wondered if there was ever any idea to reference such material in the DWP? Perhaps not if the original testamentary document source is not adequately cited? The reason I ask is because not all Wills referred to in the Caunter book are to be found in the Index, though I have so far only checked for a few. 3. Hi Brian Thanks. I did check the list of sources before I posted. I’d forgotten about the minor source list though so thanks for the reminder. It is useful to consult even when not looking for Wills. And now you remind me I do remember reading that you raided many many sources. What a fantastic resource you’ve created. I can’t find a reference to the publication I mentioned. It is.. Caunter Family Records by F. Lyde Caunter, Pub 1930 and Printed by The Solicitors’ Law Stationery Soc. Ltd. Fetter Lane, E.C.4. The copy I’ve consulted in the past is in the West Country Studies section of the DA. However, I recently found that it has been digitised and can be read at the internet archive site here.. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__archive.org_details_caunterfamilyrec00caun_page_n9&d=DwIFaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=_kHYb0dMtukKdTNCoURit9Z6fYN0hak3I3SjPWTU2FA&m=UQBftarBzsW8XfZD_3g7O7UPSviX9uaaZoBDtPdqkzs&s=79Pq_kx2f7eRMaZ4L2q_a41_ppSqJdFO8splScCeEM4&e= Unfortunately in the hard copy there is no index. Every page has to be searched for a reference to Wills .. though it isn’t a big book. But the internet archive format is very useful.. it’s searchable as I’m sure you know so I find it easier to use. For anyone else reading this post with Caunter connections, the book has a foldout family tree.. In fact I thought the original had two, but I can’t find my notes at the moment! I’m tidying up. 3. Hello Jane and list: I wonder if the Caunter family documents might have been the inspiration for the writing of and filming of the movie, */Canterville Ghost/*  ...??  That was a good picture - just loved it!  Wish I had a ghost in my lineage, but so far haven't run across one.  Perhaps one needs a castle for the ghost to haunt - I'm out of luck there, too! 3. I have found several Wills attached to other documents online at the UK National Archives. Those Wills are not something that come up when you search a surname, but if you find a document like a lease or some other agreement, it could have someone's Will attached. 3. Re Nancy Frey's comment, a now lost will may not only be found *attached* to a document such as a lease but be quoted in its entirety *within* a document. In such a case the testator's name is unlikely to appear in any calendar let alone in an index, so you will be very lucky to come across one except by chance. My example was the will of Peter Battishill, mercer of Exeter made in January 1719 (New Style), which was quoted in a deposition in Chancery Proceeding C11 388/13 at TNA. I provided Devon RO with a copy of my transcript of the will to which they gave an accession reference 4667Z add/Z 2 so that it does now appear in their calendar. In a similar fashion, in another legal dispute I also came across a quotation of an 16th century Devon Parish Register entry - the Register is now lost and of course at that time there were no Bishop's Transcripts! You never know your luck! Guy Lawton On Sat, 13 Oct 2018 at 22:45, Nancy Frey <ncanuck@gmail.com> wrote: > I have found several Wills attached to other documents online at the UK > National Archives.
