Hi Joy and Terry, Well finally I got a copy of the will of Francis Harris and it is very very interesting. Francis does make bequests to his wife Frances and also his children, William, Betty and John Harris who are exactly the same names as the ones born in Oakford he also mentions a Mary Buridge does anyone have any idea who that could be, I searched online but couldn't come up with a name. As a matter of interest his daughter Betty has the surname Toby and I believe that you told me about her in the 1851 census where she is shown as being born in Oakford so that clinches it. Now it seems that the only Francis that fits the bill is the one born in Harpford in 1769 and the only Frances is Frances Heydon born in Rackenford in 1776 which is very close to Oakford I think one of your members already told me about her so why did Francis move to Oakford and marry a local girl have 3 children there and then pack up and move back to Harpford. In Francis' will he lists his profession as Thatcher but he has quite a portfolio, he owns about 5 houses, he leaves his "cows and other kinds of cattle" to his wife he has apple orchards, willow trees, nurseries, cider and casks, insurance policies that make yearly payments it just goes on and on. If any of you has an interest in seeing the will I will send it to you. Just thought of something, maybe he inherited all of these properties so that could be the reason he returned? Do you think we can safely say that Francis and Frances are the ones married in Oakford in 1792 and they also are the ones born in Harpford and Rackenford? Thanks for all of your help. I didn't see it originally on FreeBMD because the surname has been given an extra s - Harriss. The death falls in the March quarter of 1841 so it was before the census was taken on June 7 1841. It does look as if Francis and Frances may both have moved to Harpford. It might be worth ordering a copy of the will to see who is named in it which will, hopefully, confirm his children's names. Also, if you obtain the death certificates, they may have the name and relationship of the person who notified the Registrar which could also verify that they are the Francis and Frances who baptised children at Oakford. The age at death is consistent with the Francis Harris baptised at Harpford 26 Nov 1769, parents William and Priscilla. I agree with everybody's analysis that William Harris must have had family ties in Aylesbeare and moved there after the death? Of his first wife although I can find no marriage or death record for Mary. One thing is a bit strange William and Caroline Harris had two children with Caroline's maiden name Dyer for a middle name (Ann Dyer Harris 1831 and Sarah Dyer Harris 1829) I would have thought that the parents were not married but they did marry in 1829 it sounds so 21st century. I did see the 1841 census showing Frances Harris aged 60 in Newton Poppleford and also a burial for Frances aged 63 in Harpford. So could it be possible that after the death of her husband Frances moved from Oakford to be close to her children William and Betty? I will continue looking for Francis and Frances Regards Chris Martin The DEVON-L mailing list is co-sponsored by GENUKI/Devon > http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DEV/ > and > the Devon FHS (http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/ ) List archive for Devon > can be found at > http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index?list=devon > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------------------ The DEVON-L mailing list is co-sponsored by GENUKI/Devon http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DEV/ and the Devon FHS (http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/ ) List archive for Devon can be found at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index?list=devon ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------------------ The DEVON-L mailing list is co-sponsored by GENUKI/Devon http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DEV/ and the Devon FHS (http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/ ) List archive for Devon can be found at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index?list=devon ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------------------ The DEVON-L mailing list is co-sponsored by GENUKI/Devon http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DEV/ and the Devon FHS (http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/ ) List archive for Devon can be found at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index?list=devon ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------------------ The DEVON-L mailing list is co-sponsored by GENUKI/Devon http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DEV/ and the Devon FHS (http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/ ) List archive for Devon can be found at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index?list=devon ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
