Joy, All I can say is the forums , indexes and transcriptions have their fair share of errors and omissions and best practice is to get a copy of the original. The burden of proof is up to the individual Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: DEVON [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Joy Langdon Sent: 03 January 2017 19:13 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [DEV] surnames: Lock/Holland/Chown/Trute/Cudmore/Squire/Tucker/Southcombe/Shipland/Morrish/Ashwin Well, Paul, I think I would apply a bit of common sense. If there are multiple marriages for the surnames then obviously this cannot be relied on. But when there is only one Trute/Ruffle marriage indexed on FreeBMD and three children are registered with those combined surnames in the next 6 years then, hey, I'd live dangerously and make the wild assumption they might be related! There is too much corroborating information on the certificate, fathers names, profession etc. Too many times have I seen that groups of families use the same forenames and tend to produce a generation of the same name. From 1912 you can search birth registrations using mother's surname so, for instance, a search using Trute as surname and Lock as maiden name results in two names being registered in the Barnstaple district: Thomas A in 1921 and Sydney J in 1922. A search using Ashwin in surname and Lock in mother's surname gives 4 results and so on. You can then continue with searching for what happened to the children. A Thomas A Trute married a Jean C Ruffle in Surrey in 1943 and their are 3 Trute/Ruffle birth registrations, one in Surrey, one in Plympton and one in Plymouth. Sydney J Trute married Betty E Rooke, Barnstaple registration district 1949. If you are hoping to contact descendants, once you get to people still likely to be living try searching their names on the internet, they sometimes have Facebook accounts. It may be worth looking at FindMyPast, you can pay per view if you don't want a subscription. Searching the newspaper archive for George Lock, Swimbridge gets many results including what looks like an interview with your grandfather in 1937. My subscription has expired but the bit of the report I can see from the search says: "18 Feb 1937 North Devon Journal - Interesting Homecomer Interview - A man of many parts is at present on holiday with his parents at Swimbridge. He is Mr George Lock, son of Mr and Mrs George Lock of Station Cross, Swimbridge and formerly of Indiwell Farm. Mr George Lock......." I couldn't see a marriage on Freebmd for George Lock and Ellen Holland. Using the new GRO search facility to, which displays mother's surname, searching for George and his brother Emanuel's birth registrations shows that George's parents were James Lock and Elizabeth Ward who married in 1854 (see FreeBMD). There are transcriptions of Chittlehampton PRS from the mid 1600s to 1837 on Genuki Devon: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DEV/Chittlehampton Regards, Joy Langdon ----Original message---- >From : [email protected] Date : 02/01/2017 - 21:33 (GMTST) To : [email protected] Subject : [DEV] surnames: Lock/Holland/Chown/Trute/Cudmore/Squire/Tucker/Southcombe/Shipland/Morrish/Ashwin i”m searching for information on my paternal great grandparents and their extended families. My great grandfather, George Lock, was born 1855, Chittlehampton, Devon, and his wife, Ellen Holland, born in Swimbridge, Devon [1858]. I anticipate they are buried in a Methodist cemetery near or in Swimbridge. Rev. G. Richards [Methodist] conducted Ellen's service. Newspaper Headline reads, “Loss to Swimbridge, funeral of Mrs George Lock". At the time of her death, she was 83 and was survived by 5 daughters and 2 sons*. Information about the funeral was taken from a newspaper clipping with no date and includes only the last part of the name of the newspaper on the masthead, the letters “rald”. Herald? I have no information on my ggrandfather’s death. I know from the clipping that Ellen predeceased him. Living children of Ellen, at the time of her death were: Lucy Ashwin [Isle of Wight], Louise [George] Trute, A. Stevens [Plympton], Bertha Chown, [Swimbridge] and Mrs [unknown] Squire [Swimbridge] Maud Cudmore [Barnstable], Mrs Beatrice Tucker [Ontario, Canada], **George Abner Locke [Catherine Locke nee Thomas], Strathroy, Ontario, Canada, Jim Lock [Ontario, Canada] and Beatrice Tucker [Ontario, Canada]. I believe the first name of Beatrice’s husband was Bill. Grandchildren in England included: George & Joyce Cudmore and Ira and Rita Chown. [There may have been more grandchildren]. Also attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs F. Southcombe, brother in law and sister in law & Mesdames Shipland and Morrish [included as family, but relationship not disclosed]. *A son of George and Ellen, Thomas Alfred Lock, died in January 1919, while returning to Devon with the British Armed Forces. Buried at sea. His Commonwealth war gravestone is in Greece. This information was not included on the clipping **George Abner Locke is my grandfather. The “e” was apparently added to our surname at the time of his marriage in Canada to my grandmother, Catherine Thomas, known as “Cassie.” Lucy Ashwin and Louise [aka Louie] with her husband George Trute visited my grandparents for about 1 year sometime between 1960 and 1963. I believe Louie and George had 3 sons. Lucy Ashwin had a Daughter, Doreen (husband, Gerald), and a grandson, Timothy, Surnames not known Beatrice and her husband may have had at least one child, a son; Bill? I believe “Beaty”returned to & was buried in England. Any leads or information that can share on members of the European side of this extended family would be sincerely appreciated. I have information on the North American family.
