    1. [DEV] travel from London to Plymouth c 1876
    2. Clerkenwell workhouse also has problems with its "filthy state of a cesspool " in 1854 , but it also has Devon related items in the settlement of John Williams and his wife Elizabeth married in Dawlish , lived in Teignmouth ,( also 1854 ), he is now settled Chudleigh he is about 51 yrs of age and son of John and Mary Williams , the reference for this is in DRO . Also DRO and much earlier , 1807-23 , monthly meetings of the Society of Friends , misc papers, "vacancies on the staff of the Friends School and Workhouse , Clerkenwell " . I wonder if the latter isn`t a clue as to the organisation which might have provided funds for the journey , the Quakers have a huge reputation for their charity work with prisoners . And finally , this is another quite interesting idea , again 1824 , " Supporting letter to Tomlinson from John Webb, commending the prisoner for having brought his wife's mother and children from a St Austell workhouse [Cornwall] to London and providing for them; also noting the disinclination of the prisoner's wife to help procure his release." The prisoner was a Chelsea Pensioner and owed £200 ( in 1824) in fines for assaulting his wife . -----Original Message----- From: Diane Foster Sent: Sunday, April 23, 2017 1:40 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [DEV] travel from London to Plymouth c 1876 My ggm married an Italian Merchant Seaman and I have found no trace of him other than on their marriage certificate and his name on the birth certificates of the two babies born to them; plus their Roman Catholic Baptism in the Italian Church, London. I am very grateful to the suggestions arising from my question and have given me the opportunity to rethink ggm and her journey. Her stay in the Clerkenwell Workhouse was not very long, so I think as someone suggested, she was only there for the birth and a short time after Her father was a tortoishell worker and ended up as a widower dying in a workhouse, so the family were not very well off. I have not found any previous connection to Devon that would have caused ggm to skedadle off to Plymouth. I am very grateful to you all for your suggestions. sincerely, Diane On Sat, Apr 22, 2017 at 8:51 PM, <[email protected]> wrote: > Ah ha !!!! so more is known !!! when and > where did they marry ? and if she had a working husband the workhouse > would take steps to remove her to his care (?) . > > -----Original Message----- From: Diane Foster > Sent: Saturday, April 22, 2017 1:17 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [DEV] travel from London to Plymouth c 1876 > > Hello Michael, no, ggm was definitely from London.
