    1. Re: [DEV] NANKIVELL DEVON Digest, Vol 12, Issue 364

    3. Hello, I manage the DNA of several of my cousins one of whom has Nankivell ancestors on her "other" side, ie, not shared with me. Her GEDMatch number is A579963 and I'd welcome contact with any of her DNA matches in this line. Her great-grandfather, Richard NANKIVELL was born in Lidford, Devon in 1847 and moved to the Camelford area of Cornwall (living with his brother who had moved earlier) before marrying and settling in north Cornwall, dying there in 1908. He and his brothers were all stone masons and I was interested to read that one of the other list members mentioned that their connection in this family was a mining engineer. The Camelford area was important for mining/ quarrying for very many centuries. My cousin was under the impression that this was a Cornish name and was surprised to hear that her ancestor come from Devon. I have not researched it, but I suspect that one line of enquiry would be that this was, in effect, a family of "journeying stoneworkers", originating in Cornwall but travelling to where the best mining or quarrying work happened to be. Later in C19, many Cornish miners and other stoneworkers migrated more permanently to work in the rapidly expanding mining industries in the British Colonies - in South Africa, Canada, Australia ...
