Thanks Edna for that. Yes, I knew there was a Tidwell farmhouse as that is where I have a couple of sets of ancestors identified from Census data, Wills and other documents. I haven’t seen that site though. I believe it’s a bijou b&b now! I don’t think apprentices, labourers etc would have been in the house with the family so I’m just wondering if there was another house/cottage which was used but not listed separately. Must be I guess. x > On 17 Aug 2017, at 14:53, liverpud <[email protected]> wrote: > > Jane Lucas, > > There is a Tidwell Farmhouse at Staverton, Devon perhaps of interest to you: > > http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101147410-tidwell-farmhouse-staverton#.WZWfOOmQxGA > > Ap - Apprentice > MS - Man Servant > FS - Female Servant > Ind - Independent > > Cheers, > > Edna - sunny Ottawa > > > > > -----Original Message----- From: Jane Lucas > Sent: Thursday, August 17, 2017 8:27 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [DEV] 1841 CENSUS STAVERTON > > Hi All > > Is anyone familiar with the geography of this Parish? I’m looking at a transcription of the 1841 Census which I found on GENUKI. Not sure who produced it. GENUKI say it came from the Parishes of the South Hams website but I can’t see who runs it. > > They have transcribed Tidwell as Tedwell, which probably doesn’t matter as most people will know that’s an error. In 1841 I have a number of people living there which I already knew and they are all shown. However, there are eight people transcribed as living at Tidwell that I have never heard of. Perhaps there was a farm cottage that the enumerator listed separately but didn’t record a place name? The original image lists them with Tidwell before going on to the next household. The Ancestry Record shows all those unknown (to me) eight as a separate household but there is definitely no new name in the place column in the original image. > > It’s quite interesting as three or four of the unknowns have occupations as ‘Ap’ which I take to be apprentice? > > Also does anyone know what ‘FS’, ’MS’ or ‘Ind’ means in the Occupation column? > > Many thanks > Jane Lucas > Devon > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------------ > The DEVON-L mailing list is co-sponsored by GENUKI/Devon > http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DEV/ > and > the Devon FHS (http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/ ) > List archive for Devon can be found at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index?list=devon > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > ------------------------------------------ > The DEVON-L mailing list is co-sponsored by GENUKI/Devon > http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DEV/ > and > the Devon FHS (http://www.devonfhs.org.uk/ ) > List archive for Devon can be found at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index?list=devon > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message Jane Lucas [email protected] 01297 792363 00 44 (0)7 77 55 72 00 4
