    3. Many thanks to Paul, Joy and Mike for your information. Devon List people are the greatest! The strange thing is, I received answers to my email, but have not yet received my original enquiry. Weird! Anyway, after following up on the Mormon Immigration index, I'm beginning to unravel the story of the James Watts family.    The WATTS family moved from the farm in North Devon to Cardiff, Glamorgan between 1851 and 1861.    The first to emigrate was George Albert WATTS (b.1837 West Down) who traveled as a labourer age 18 from Liverpool to New York in 1856 on board the sailing ship Caravan. He died in Utah in 1920.    His parents, James Watts (b.1801 Georgeham) and Elizabeth "Betty or Betsy" (nee STANBURY) (b.1795) followed him and traveled from Liverpool to New York in 1862 on board the William Tapscott. A journal written describing the voyage says "This ship was a three mastedsailing vessel, old and worn out; an old tub not fit for merchandise, but goodenough to carry the Mormons on. The ship was eight weeks and two days crossingthe ocean. After the ship landed in New York, she was not considered fit to carry anything back but lumber so they loaded herwith that and she water-logged and was lost at sea."     Traveling in 1862 with James and Betty were eldest son John Watts (b.1826 West Down) gardener age 35, Mary Watts age 11, and John's wife Margaret Watts age 59.    Also on board the William Tapscott in 1862 were James Watt's son William James Watts (b.1834 West Down) labourer age 26, his wife Eleanor Ann (HILL) age 21 and Mary Jane Watts, infant. The same family appears traveling from Liverpool to New York in 1864 on board the General McClellan, so apparently they went back to England for some reason. The second journey included Mary Jane Watts age 4 and the addition of William Henry Watts, infant.      James Watt's daughter Jane Watts (b.1829 West Down) married Edmond LYNHAM in 1854 at Llandaff Cathedral. Edmond Lynham, labourer age 37, traveled from Liverpool to New York in 1869 on board the Minnesota, traveling with his son George age 13 and daughter Elizabeth age 8.   Jane Lynham followed in 1870 from Liverpool to New York on board the Manhattan, with her children who are listed as Sarah age 7, Clara age 4, Heber age 3, Henry infant. I have not found James Watts's son James Watts (b.1828 West Down) in the Mormon archives, so perhaps he stayed in England, as his youngest brother Henry Watts (b.1838 West Down) certainly did, living in Cardiff and working on the railways. The family settled in Ogden, Weber County, Utah, and also in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah. I hope this bit of research can help someone. Meanwhile, if anyone has connections to this family I'd like to hear from you.     Fenella in Toronto ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Fenella Rook Smith <[email protected]> To: DEVON-L <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 30, 2017 9:17 PM Subject: James WATTS b. Georgeham 1801, family emigration to Utah James WATTS b.1801 Georgeham and wife Elizabeth "Betty" (nee STANBURY) (married in 1826 at West Down) farmed at Dean, West Down, North Devon, and had children John 1826, James 1828, Jane 1829, George 1832, William James 1834, George Albert 1837, Henry 1838. They appear in 1841 and 1851 census, but not 1861, and the family emigrated to USA, settling in Ogden, Weber County, USA, where James WATTS was buried in 1889. His children and their spouses are all buried in Ogden and in Bountiful, Utah.Which port would the family have travelled from? How long was the journey? Would they have decided to leave England because of financial reasons? Or been persuaded by Mormon missionaries? Were there many families from Devon who emigrated to Utah?James WATTS is my 2xg-grandfather's brother.ThanksFenella
