    3. Sorry Ruth -- I've just realized I wasn't thinking straight. Barnstaple Union is the District in which the death was registered, not the parish of burial. By way of complication, the death of another Mary Lemon, but much younger, was registered in Bideford District in the same J Quarter 1861, so it's quite probable that both of those Marys, among others of the same name, are buried in various different parishes in North Devon. FamilySearch Catalog has Atherington PRs, including 1861 Burials, as digitised images that can browsed at an FHC, but not at home. https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/2325540?availability=Family%20History%20Library They are probably the same images that can be scrolled through on FMP, but I can't be sure because I don't have a current sub. I searched FMP/BNA hoping to find a report of Mary's funeral in the NDJ, but found none. And FMP has no non-conformist burials of any Mary Lemon in Devon. You have told us that Mary married her dead husband's brother, which was contrary to Canon law. We all know a lot of that went on and the first vicar may have turned a blind eye, especially if Mary had children who might have become a charge on the parish. But 20 years later, a different vicar of Atherington might have regarded Mary's second marriage as incestuously sinful and refused her burial in consecrated ground or her entry in the burial register, and might have refused James' gravestone to be inscribed as "Also Mary, widow of James and wife of his brother John". You probably know that farmer John Lemon remarried very soon after Mary's death: MARRIAGES. 1st inst., at Atherington, by licence, by the Rev. J. Arthur, rector, Mr. John Lemon, of Wixland farm, yeoman, to Mrs. Mary Down, of the same parish. 3 October 1861 - North Devon Journal Martin Beavis -----Original Message----- From: Martin Beavis Sent: Saturday, April 29, 2017 10:48 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [DEV] Mary LEMON or LEAMON nee PHILLIPS Hi Ruth -- How about this from the GRO Index? LEMON, MARY age 64 GRO Reference: 1861 J Quarter in BARNSTAPLE UNION Volume 05B Page 317 Barnstaple is about 8 miles from Atherington. Martin Beavis -----Original Message----- From: Ruth Wilson Sent: Saturday, April 29, 2017 5:08 PM To: Devon Subject: [DEV] Mary LEMON or LEAMON nee PHILLIPS Hi, I wonder if anyone can find the burial place of Mary Lemon (1798-1861). The North Devon Journal has the following announcement on 27 June 1861 24th instant at Wixland Farm, Atherington, Mary wife of Mr John Lemon aged 63. John is buried with his second wife (also Mary ) in Atherington Parish churchyard in 1894. Mary's first husband was James Lemon (brother of John) and he died in 1840 and is also buried in Atherington. There is no sign of Mary in the Atherington or High Bickington parish church registers. Can anybody suggest where else she may be buried - High Bickington chapel? Mary does not seem to have been baptised. I believe she was the daughter of John Phillips and Grace Hern. If her age at death is correct then she was born at about the time her father died and was buried in High Bickington. I have assumed that in the aftermath of her birth, her father's death and her mother being left with seven children, it got overlooked. Her mother's sister Ann Rendel (nee Hern) appears in all the censuses from 1841 to 1861, living with Mary at Wixland farm, so there seems to be a family connection.
