I think I read that earlier this year Ancestry were having serious problems with the Rootsweb servers which they were in no hurry to fix and during which time the service almost came to a halt for several months. However Northumberland and Devon, also an active forum, do not use Rootsweb and I have noticed that business is slowing down. It may have been summer but I also have noticed that more and more societies and interest groups seem to be embracing Facebook etc. which makes them much easier to find. Forums like Devon and Northumberland and Durham seem to have split between experienced core users who usually are providing answers (and have been for years) and new questioners who dip in and out. I suspect the questioners are drifting over to Facebook. Personally I have no wish to join the social media world but I feel that unless the forums are given wider publicity they will die. And I think people generally have cottoned on to the idea that they can do most of their own family research online without the need for the county lists and the expertise behind these lists . -----Original Message----- From: Denys Thomas Sent: Monday, September 25, 2017 6:43 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [DEV] Rootsweb lists On 10 September this year I wrote to six Rootsweb Lists, following the correct procedure to subscribe. I have had no acknowledgement or received any messages from these lists. I had checked on lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com and found the instructions on how to subscribe and unsubscribe from each list. They were all lists which i would have expected to be well subscribed e.g. CANADA-ROOTS-L, ENGLAND-ROOTS-L and NEW-ZEALAND-L However I have now searched for past messages on these lists. None have received a single message in 2017. e.g. GENANZ-L had 73 messages in 2016 but none in 2017. Others had their last message in 2014 or earlier. I can only assume that these lists (and probably most others listed by Rootsweb) are no more, have ceased to exist, have gone to meet their maker!
