Just for the record Familysearch hold the following: Christenings, 1556-1837; marriages, 1558-1837; burials, 1557-1837; banns of marriages, 1764-1837. Family History Library British Film 916814 The index is included in Familysearch and the Register images can be viewed at a Family History Centre. Other records are available and the BTs can be viewed at home. Search the Catalogue by parish. For Barnstaple the BTs and Wainwrights document are available. I always use Familysearch first. It is free, has the best search engine and their filming is the basis for most of the images available online. They are currently digitising 2000 films a day with a target completion of 2020. It would seem very likely that he is the Henry Marley bap 10 Feb 1782 at Barnstaple to Hugh & Jane Marl(e)y. There is then a distinct likelihood, I believe, that Hugh is bap 1 Jan 1749 at Bishops Nympton. But how can I demonstrate that (a) there are no other *plausible* High Marleys around and (b) the Hugh from Bishops Nympton didn't go off elsewhere? Disregarding emigration to far flung parts and alien abduction, obviously. If all the Devon baptisms were on FMP, then it would be OK, I could just work from FMP - but they aren't. When I last looked there seemed several issues: 1. Barnstaple itself isn't in FMP - but that's OK, I have a PDF of the Thomas Wainwright transcript of the Barnstaple registers up to 1812. 2. Some of the FMP PRs are "transcripts" - anyone know if this poses any serious problems? Are the transcripts just indexes, missing out data, for instance? 3. When I last looked there were several parishes missing altogether from FMP up in that north part around Barnstaple - however, I now see that most of the missing ones are on the Devon FHS site in the members area. So that looks like my present to myself before long. I think there may be 1 or 2 others missing as well but FamilySearch seemed to include at least 1 as an index. Given all this, what's the best method of searching in people's experience? Do FMP first, work out what's missing in the northern parts of Devon by comparing the FMP and "Devon" RO PR lists, then search for each missing parish? (I'm assuming that there isn't a nice simple list of parishes and where to go for each….) I have the impression that you are unaware of GENUKI/Devon (the co-sponsor of this mailing list), whose web address is given at the foot of each message. On the main Devon page, under Church Records, you’ll find overall explanations of the availability of Devon’s church records and transcripts, supplemented by information, again under Church Records, in the set of separate pages it has for each individual parish. Grateful for advice on how best to search - I'm used to Northern parishes that cover bigger areas! Hope this helps.
