Why not use Familysearch either online or with their microfilm copies. Their soundex search is probably the best around, for a sensible list of alternative spellings and its free and their indexers tend to be more accurate.. Once you have a short list of possibles, then move to the GRO search.. Also many local registrars are online and they hold the original. To keep track, I simply start with the multiple of 5 below and work up in 5s - e.g. start 1840+/-2, then 1845+/-2, etc.... That's easy enough to remember for me.
