    3. Spelling of surnames was not standardised at that time, the parish clerk just wrote what he heard. Chadecke might be a variation of Shaddock (other variations include Chadwick, Chaddock, Shadwick,Shaddock). It is from the place name Chadwick which is Anglo Saxon and formed from the personal name Ceadda and wic (dairy farm). The variations Chaddick and Chadwicke do appear in the Minehead parish registers about the same time. I found a transcription of the Skilgate parish registers online and the transcriber has noted Elizabeth Bandis's surname as suspect so the interpretation of the handwritten name could be wrong. I looked for names in the Skilgate parish register that could be misinterpreted as Bandis and I wondered if it is Bawdrip? "W" and "N" are very similar and old manuscript writing often had a tail on the "S". You need to see the original image. Found 2 marriages in Somerset . William Bowden to Joan Chadecke in Minehead 1687 and John Smith to Elizabeth Bandis 1702 in Skilgate . I'm interested in the origins of both surnames .Could Bandis be Italian ? Some references online to Bandi being of Italian origins .No idea regarding Chadecke. Any ideas ?
