    1. [DEV] Thomas ACKLAND & Samuel SPARKES of Dunkeswell

    3. At last I have found where my Thomas ACKLANDs lived in the Dunkeswell Land Tax Assessments. In the 1780s they were renting Abbey Wood and Musgraves. In the 1830s Thomas Jnr rented Hooked Rise Farm from Rev Mr PALMER. I have found all these places on the map and it confirms my suspicion that Thomas Snr lived in the area where the parishes of Hemyock (where he came from), Sheldon and Dunkeswell meet. Thomas Snr died in 1827 age 99 Dunkeswell, he may have moved to Hooked Rise with Thomas Jnr but I suspect he lived with his daughter Sarah, wife of Samuel SPARKES. The LTAs show the SPARKES, Peter and then his son Samuel as proprietors of Ridgeways House (in the 1780's listed as 'former Ridgeways House'). I can't find where this was, does anyone know? To complicate things in the 1830s John SCADDING is also listed as a proprietor of Ridgeways and is renting to William RIDGEWAY. In 1841 Samuel SPARKES was at Abbey Mills with his wife Sarah, son Nicholas & granddaughter Sarah plus Elizabeth ACKLAND his grand niece. The SPARKES family remained there until 1911, Samuel's son Nicholas, then William (maybe another son or a cousin), then William's widow Ann, then William's son Nicholas. Maybe 'Ridgeways' was either near or actually part of Abbey Mills? None of these people appear in the 1844 Tithes and the only property named is Hooked Rise which according to the summary still belongs to Rev William PALMER though in the list it belongs to George E S SPEKE and is rented to James ROSIER (Thomas ACKLAND Jnr moved to Pitminster before 1837). I have not read the records 1791-1815 as I could not get to the LDS Library and the film is due to go back in a couple of days. I have made a few assumptions about identity so if anyone has any extra information or other opinions please let me know. Regards Diana
