At the head of my family tree stands GEORGE STURE - born circa 1684 and buried 5th May 1760 at Woodleigh. He married ELIZABETH SMYTH in 1716 at Black Awton. She died in 1719, as did their son, George. They are described as the wife and the son of George Steer of Woodleigh. He then married SARAH FOALE at Sherford on 2nd September 1719. She died in 1754. I cannot yet find a George Sture born in 1684, who might fit this picture. His gravestone shows that he was 76 at death. I would be very grateful if anyone has a clue as to where he came from. Best wishes, Philip Steer

Hi all This one is probably more for friends and relatives than those actually subscribing to the list. Please pass this on to those you think may be interested. I am intending to run a 2 day Beginnings Course in Family History in Bideford in January on behalf of the DFHS. The intention is to show people in a fairly systematic way how to trace ancestors back to about 1837 with indicators to some earlier records. Those taking part will be using a variety of different sources and will also be introduced to using computers for family history. The idea is to answer lots of FAQs and to use other means than just didactic teaching to suit different learning styles and to be as informal as possible. No prior knowledge of family history is needed or expected. The details are: The venue is the Pollyfield Centre, Avon Road, Bideford, EX39 4BL which is the venue for the north Devon groups meetings. The 21A bus stops about 100 yards away. The dates and times are Saturdays 10th and 24th January 2015 9.30-4.00pm on both days. You will have to bring your own lunch as there are no places I can see locally to get food. Free tea and coffee all day! The cost is £20 for the two days per head. For more details please contact me on e-mail via the list or snail mail to Jon Frayne Mole Cottage Atherington Devon EX37 9HY
Afternoon all, Would SKS who has a sub to Forces-War- Records please be able to do a look up for me please. I can send details off-list as it is not Devon related. Regards Bev

Because they can't be received if none are sent, although I've received a few. Obviously yours are going out, so if you receive this one then they are coming in as well. It's a major holiday weekend in the USA too, so many lists are slow for that reason as well. David E. Hi Adrian, If you look here: <http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/em/stthomas.php> you will see in the box on the right, starting "Street name meanings", that it refers to the Buller family and to Shooting Marsh Stile, so I think your entry reads "2 Bullers Cottages, Shooting Marsh Style (or Stile)" Best wishes, Mike Gould Leicestershire -----Original Message----- From: devon-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Adrian via Sent: 25 November 2014 20:19 To: Devon List Subject: [DEV] 1871 CENSUS - ST THOMAS EXETER - PHILLIP BACK Phillip BACK, a married fisherman aged 43, was born in Devon and at the time of the 1871 census he was boarding with Benjamin and Eliza DEY in St Thomas, Exeter. Martin, So much to consider :-) The Bible itself was begun by William Henry and his wife Elizabeth Ann, nee Crook, so I'm assuming they knew correct spellings. But it is entered as Dolish. Her death certificate says just that she was born in Devonshire, so at least the County appears certain.. And the occupation of her father as a coastguard comes from her death certificate also, in 1875. The ancestry tree you mention is related, and the date of birth comes from information supplied me, I 'm fairly certain. The truth may out one day, or maybe not, all part of the fun. Thanks again, and to everyone else for their suggestions. Cheers James Butler -----Original Message----- From: Martin Beavis [mailto:beavis.history@yahoo.co.uk] Sent: Saturday, 22 November 2014 10:29 PM To: James Butler; devon@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DEV] Dawlish baptsm Hi James - FMP does not appear to have any record of the CROOK-EDWARDS marriage or the 1815 baptism of Elizabeth Ann CROOK that you are looking for, neither in Dawlish nor anywhere else. There was a CROOK family in Dawlish but on FMP they do not appear in the main parish of Dawlish St Gregory as baptisms before 1811 or as marriages before 1832, so the CROOK family may not have arrived in Dawlish much before 1811, or your CROOK may have lived in Dawlish St Mark for which FMP has no baptisms before 1885 or nearby in Cofton Chapelry for which FMP has a couple of CROOK baptisms in the 1860s. And Elizabeth Ann CROOK may not have been baptised in the parish of her birth. If you cannot find any other record of her birth or baptism then is it possible that she took the name CROOK from a stepfather William who married a widow EDWARDS or single-mother EDWARDS? Are you sure that "Dolish" really is Dawlish, Devon, England? Are you talking about a Dawlish Bible or an Irish Bible to which a "foreign" bride was appended? If Dawlish is correct then that entry was made by someone unfamiliar with the correct spelling. Alternatively, if "Dolish" is indeed correct then Google finds a Dolish Farmhouse B&B at Luppitt near Honiton. Another possibility is the parish of Dowlish Wake in Somerset. Do you know for sure that William and Ann CROOK emigrated from Devon to Ireland, or might Elizabeth Ann have emigrated without her parents, or might they and their daughter have been native to a "Dolish" in Ireland and never lived in England? While it is possible that Willian CROOK might have been a coastguard in Dawlish around 1815, that might well have been his occupation when his daughter married in Ireland in 1836. Ancestry has several rather questionable public trees but one (Henry Family) that looks a bit more credible is the only one that has the exact same date of birth, 27 Jan 1815, as in your family Bible, but in "Dawlish, Devon, Ireland". So that tree owner either got that date from your Bible or from another source that you have not yet found. That tree says William and Elizabeth Ann HENRY married in Donegal in 1836 and emigrated to Australia in 1837. Good hunting. Regards - Martin Beavis -----Original Message----- From: James Butler via Sent: Friday, November 21, 2014 5:08 AM To: devon@rootsweb.com Subject: [DEV] Dawlish baptsm My great-great- grandmother, Elizabeth ANN Crook, was born in Dolish (sic) on 27 January 1815, according to the family Bible, which appears to be accurate in all respects so far. Her father was William Crook, a coastguard, her mother was born Ann Edwards (according to the information on her death certificate, as supplied by her husband. I understand the Dawlish registers are in the Devon County Record Office. Are transcripts available? Or is someone able to check one day if Elizabeth was christened there, or any sibling information? I have no idea if the parents married there or not, and William later moved to Ireland, as my great-great-grandparents were married in County Londonderry in 1836.
