    2. paul.hockie via
    3. The incumbents writing is a little erratic but the final two words in almost every entry are "sepult erat" meaning "was buried". The word after the name is the status of the deceased - uxor/wife filius/filia son/daughter - and in this case Widd - widow. By this time most parishes were using English with the latin being a direct translation of the English. Also the vicar may be using a formula. Sepult should be sepultum and widow vidua. Charytia is a Latinisation of Charity. The letters y and j do not exist and i is used for all and the Latin origin, caritas, means affection/esteem rather than charity as we know it. Also most of the registers I have looked at are using widow rather than relict, even in wills.
