Hello Anita, There is also the Barn Owl Pub in Guardian Road, via Honiton Road, which is just a 2 minute walk from the Record Office. Judy Last
There is now a small cafe at the Devon Heritage Centre (Record Office) in Great Moor House, where you can get drinks most of the day but order what you want for lunch when you arrive as they sell out quickly to staff as well as visitors. There's also a cafe a short walk down the road. So catering isn't the problem it used to be. Many of the parish registers are now available on-line from Find My Past - I'm busy extracting data from them at present. So if you can afford a subscription you could get some of that basic information before you visit and then when you're there concentrate on other things that aren't so readily available. Enjoy your visit and I hope you can find the information you're looking for. Hello Anita, I too went to Devon, from Australia, to fine further information about my Devon ancestors. Not everything is online as I expect you have discovered. I made my research base in Exeter, Devon. Plenty of accommodation there. The main Devon research Centre is out of town, however, there are regular buses that go to the park and ride parking centre and the research centre is across the road from it. So, easy transport and if you can walk a short distance, then this should be no problem. Also in the centre of Exeter is the Devon Family History Centre and the people there are very helpful. Depending on the time of year you are going, I would advise you to research accommodation options soonest and book - something close to the city centre would be ideal. Exeter is a lovely city - a beautiful walkway alongside the river, an interesting trip down river to the Lock Pub, ancient but great food and sits alongside the river too. If you find any rellies further south in Devon, you may have to go to the record centre in Plymouth - lots of records there and helpful staff, however, not in a good location as far as the records go. Not much parking nearby - it's a light industrial area tucked away just out of the city centre, but a good walk into town or from town if you have central accommodation. Hope the above helps. sincerely, Diane - Western Australia On Tue, Feb 3, 2015 at 7:20 AM, anita.griffith via <devon@rootsweb.com> wrote: > Hi Everyone - I'm planning a trip in the spring to visit the villages of > all my ancestors in Europe.I want to visit the village of Uplyme in Devon, > near Axminster, to visit the place (and maybe the house), where my great > grandfather (Jacob Alexander Adams Leeson b1883 London, died 1928 Moosomin, > Saskatchewan, Canada) grew up. Hi Everyone - I'm planning a trip in the spring to visit the villages of all my ancestors in Europe.I want to visit the village of Uplyme in Devon, near Axminster, to visit the place (and maybe the house), where my great grandfather (Jacob Alexander Adams Leeson b1883 London, died 1928 Moosomin, Saskatchewan, Canada) grew up. HI, Not sure if this would interest anyone, but for sale on ebay item number - 301508050309 >From California, is a hand written receipt for a payment made by W J Buckley or Rockey? from 1919 Thought it may interest someone.... Many thanks Stuart
Stuart, One receipt looks like Mr J Rockey and the other Mr J Rockhey. I've been working extensively on the Rock(h)ey family. One possible candidate is John Fry Rockhey (1846-1930), of Torquay, but he may have had property interests in Bideford. William Henry Rockey (married in Bideford in 1900) lived in Bideford, but I don't have any "J. Rockey" in my files as part of his family. Thanks for posting! The line shown on my website from Richard Stone to me is well documented, but I have all those Yarcombe Stones in my file and they confuse me. I checked Familysearch which shows a family named Quint was living in Widecombe around this time. If you check the same page as Audrey's marriage you will find a Robert Quint was married in November 1573.
