    3. It is probably Hammerslake. One way of locating places in a parish is to search the Tithe Apportionments Project on Friends of Devon Archives website http://www.foda.org.uk/Tithe/TitheIntro.aspx This photo of a stile at Hammerslake on Geograph gives a map reference of SX7781. Below the photo is the relevant square of the OS map locating it near Sharpitor. Click on the map for Large scale mapping. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/127093 Try googling "Hammerslake Lustleigh" - there are several suggested walks mentioning it with directions and an idea of what is in the immediate area. 3. The oldest known photograph was taken in 1826/7 so it is possible it is a photograph. From Wikipedia it says " Louis Daguerre went on to develop the daguerreotype process, the first publicly announced photographic process, which required only minutes of exposure in the camera and produced clear, finely detailed results. It was commercially introduced in 1839, a date generally accepted as the birth year of practical photography. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Kenneth Scott via" <devon@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, February 06, 2015 12:32 AM To: "John Moore" <johnbrianmoore1934@gmail.com>; <devon@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [DEV] Hemerslake > John > > Do you mean a photographic image? 3. John, Under these circumstances I buy a large scale Ordnance Survey map of the area. and, if available, a 19c Alan Godfrey map - http://www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk/index1.html. There is also https://www.old-maps.co.uk but, personally I find it easier to scan a paper map than online. If you are near London, the tithe maps in the National Archives. Browse the census before and after ( in this case 1841/1851) for the village for abodes that look or sound familiar. You be able to browse left or right to find farms and cottages on the modern and Godfrey map and this will give you the enumerators route. Discovery, the National Archives catalogue http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ has both local and national archives and includes land records going back 1000 years. Next I would recommend Directories but I see Madaleine has beat me to it. Hamerslake may be a Local variation of Hammer Pond. These were used to provide water power to a forge which you may find on a Godfrey or Old map. http://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/cdm/landingpage/collection/p16445coll4 is a good site for directories. Finally Google Maps shows a place called Heaven's Gate 0.7 miles from Lustleigh centre (some may say all of Devon is Heaven's Gate). Try saying Heaven's Gate in a Devon accent. 3. Anita, I too made a tour of ancestral villages & parishes and agree with most of the advice. It was helpful to have a a good current map for planning, and a GPS/SatNav helped while wandering around the Devon countryside. Entering the post codes for Churches/villages into the GPS/SatNav, usually brought me right to the spot. I made a list of the 8 Devon ancestral churches with info such as post codes, service times/days/phone numbers (info found by searching online parish or diocese sites & emailing a few parishes 2 weeks ahead of my visit). On a prior trip I found some parishes are no longer holding weekly Sunday services (they may be part of a rota of local parishes) and many are locked weekdays for security. One clergy replied to my email, generously notifying me when the electrician would working on site, so I was able to tour an otherwise locked parish. The floods last spring caused a few detours (GPS became a great timesaver) & be prepared to yield to farm equipment & equestrians. Jan in California.

    3. Anita, If you are planning to visit villages, unless you have plenty of time, you will need to hire a car. London - Exeter by train is OK but for the rest you are relying on varying levels of local bus services. For the villages buy a modern detailed Ordnance Survey map (Amazon Ca etc. should have them) and then use Findmypast or Ancestry Census records to try and identify where your ancestor lived. Browse the pages to the left and then to the right of your ancestor until you find a building/farm on the modern map. You should then be able to work out the route of the enumerator and where he dropped in to see your ancestor. I have found it is also worth googling the name of farms and cottages, a surprising number are still there. Use the National Archives catalogue http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ and search by name ad place. Both National and Devon archives are included although the indexing isn't all it should be. You may also find documents are downloadable. Civil BDM records are only available from either the General Registry Office(National) or the local registrar. Both will charge about £10 a copy. If you know what you want it is probably better to order them before you leave https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/. Findmypast have digitised the national index.
