    3. Hi Diana: Thanks for this correction. The source of my statement that the census was for “militia purposes” was TNA’ Discovery catalogue - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/rd/9137171c-14c6-4991-9481-55dd62af67a5 However your information trumps this. I have several other 1803 population listings in GENUKI/Devon, but I don’t think any of them are Defence of the Realm Act listings - see http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/DevonMisc/Pre-1841Census.html I’d be interested to learn if there are any other extant Defence of the Realm Act listings for Devon. Cheers Brian Randell PS A transcript of the 1803 Barnstaple census, kindly provided by Len Collum of DFHS, is now online in GENUKI/Devon. 3. Hi, thanks for this ......I have learned something today , I had no idea there was a Defence of the Realm Act of 1803 . I have been chasing a marine , b c 1797 in Buckinghamshire, who reappears in Kent at Chatham having signed on in 1821 aged 24 . Admittedly he was too late for the Napoleonic wars but ....And one of our own OPCs is chasing her soldier ancestor across hill and dale and county after county who married in 1800 in London and died in Gt Torrington in 1825. Did the DotRA oblige men of military age to join something ? militia , navy ? 3. I'd like to make a small correction to Brian Randell's message re the Barnstaple 1803 census, which was listed as being "for Militia purposes". If indeed it was for Militia purposes then it would be for men aged 28 to 45 and not 15 to 60 as stated. Neither would it have included women. Instead it is far more likely to be the Lists/Returns required from every parish under the 1803 Defence of the Realm Act (43Geo3 c55, 11th June 1803). This Act was for men aged 15 to 60 and did require records of numbers of women since the latter would have been cleared from the coastal areas in case of invasion (plus boys under 15, the aged and the infirm). This latter Act was passed after the resumption of the French/Napoleonic Wars on 16th May after the year-long Peace of Amiens. There were similar Lists made from every parish in all UK counties in 1798 and 1803, plus Lists from only the coastal counties in 1801 (and from Dorset only, in 1797). It is possible that a search of the Archives may well reveal Lists from other Devon parishes that have ben filed/misfiled under such heading as Napoleonic defences, Militia, Volunteers, or Levee en Masse. This, it turns out, is a large ( approx 70 page) document - which was "For militia purposes; arranged by streets, and distinguishes six classes: males under 15, between 15 and 60, and over 60, and the same for females" - and so is an unusually detailed pre-1841 census and would be a *very* useful addition to GENUKI/Devon. However the cost of obtaining an official photocopy would be great. And both Douglas and I live 300 miles or more from Devon and rarely get a chance to visit. > > So we are hoping that there is some kind soul on Devon-L who can take some time out of their next visit to NDRO and can use their digital camera to photograph the document for us. (The Devon Wills Project has benefitted hugely from the efforts of a volunteer, Ken Ozanne of Australia, who made several trips to the DRO Exeter, and took several thousand digital photographs, for us - so 70 photographs does not seem much to ask! :-) Unfortunately no-one stepped forward, so I’m cc’ing this reply to Devon-L in the hope that this time I’ll have better luck second time round. 3. It's all still there on https://www.thegazette.co.uk/ Go to that site, click on "All Notices" and enter the text you need to search on. HOWEVER - when I tried filtering by Notice Type, I couldn't get it to show the officers' commissions. Google may not be able to see inside the Gazette site. I didn't see a Gawtrey entry in the right period - but optical character recognition is notoriously bad for the earlier years. You may be better off with an Army List but ones for the earlier years are thin on the ground - the earliest I have found is for 1821 and that shows no Gawtrey as an **officer** anywhere in the Army. 3. I think the John Gawtrey who died in 1831 is the one listed in the "North Devon Yeomanry 1794-1924" as being Ld Rolle's Adjutant. There is the following death notice in the North Devon Journal 07 Apr 1831: "Suddenly, at Great Torrington, on Sunday last, Capt. Gawtrey, many years Adjutant of the North Devon Yeomanry Cavalry". The Royal Mail postcode finder (http://www.royalmail.com/find-a-postcode) finds one 40 Torrens Road in Brixton SW2 5BT and another in the East End between Leyton and West Ham, neither in Clerkenwell. You can find SW2 5BT on Google Maps and see number 40 on Street View, at the end of the road, two or three houses beyond the one with a blue Portaloo in the front garden. Most of Torrens Road is older terraced housing but number 40 looks 1920/30s, consistent with occupation during your 1942 date. But the house numbering may have changed at some time in the past. 3. Thanks so much to everyone for answering my Torrens Road query! How kind of you all. My great grandmother's niece (Devon) was married to an Italian man who drowned on the Arandora Star during WWII - torpedoed by the Germans. This is where she/they lived - my roots (via my ggrandmother are in East Devon). Thank you thank you!!!!! Lora
