    3. Hello Daphne The Devon Records Office also contain patient records however from looking at the year you provide I would suggest this would be too recent to release any information - but something to think about for the future. 3. Hi list Information from the internet suggests that William Axworthy WIMPEY died in Victoria, Australia in 1863. Can anybody help me with the details of his death and perhaps when he arrived in Australia? William Exworthy the son of Joan Exworthy of Bratton Clovelly was baptised on the 29 July 1806 at the Parish Church in Germansweek. He was the illegitimate son of William WIMPEY Esquire. On the 1841 census William WIMPEY aged 30 is living with his sister Charlotte RICE at Wrixhill in Bratton Clovelly. William Axworthy WIMPEY married Betsy CLAY on the 02 April 1849 at Heavitree in Devon. William stated that his father William WIMPEY was a Gent. I have been unable to find William or Betsey on the 1851 or 1861 censuses in England Regards Malcolm Hitchens

    3. Hi Elizabeth Thank you for the information on William WIMPEY. I had found most of the information on the excellent Bratton Clovelly One-Place Study website. I have also seen the newspaper articles on FMP regarding the infighting over his will. I am pursuing some information held at the Berkshire Record Office re: the Commissions from the Archdeacon to neighbouring clergy to administer oaths to executors or administrators, with letters of request from the goods of William Wimpey of Bratton Clovelly, Devon, 1815-1817, although I am not sure what information that will hold. I wondered if the 4 EXWORTHY children benefitted from the Will with perhaps the proviso that they used the WIMPEY name, giving comfort to the bachelor William that his surname would continue. Thanks once again Malcolm Hitchens

    3. Hi, can`t help with the D Historian vol 62 though I am sure someone will find it for you .......but there is a will online for Joseph Wimpey , dated 1796 , he is of Bockhampton , Southampton but currently residing in Bratton Clovelly . In all the Bratton Clovelly online records there is evidence of William Wimpey from 1773 Freeholders list. And Exworthy comes out better as Axworthy .......a Thomas Shapland witnesses Joseph`s will in 1796. These are well to do people and should leave a considerable paper trail . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Malcolm via" <devon@rootsweb.com> To: <Devon@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 23, 2015 7:18 AM Subject: [DEV] WIMPEY of Bratton Clovelly > Hi list > > > > I am interested in William WIMPEY of Bratton Clovelly also known as 'The > Squire or Squire IMPEY'. > > > > I am interested in getting or seeing a copy of an article in the Devon > Historian Volume 62 called - Joseph and William Wimpey The Elusive > Manorial > Lords by R.C.M. 3. Hi list I am interested in William WIMPEY of Bratton Clovelly also known as 'The Squire or Squire IMPEY'. I am interested in getting or seeing a copy of an article in the Devon Historian Volume 62 called - Joseph and William Wimpey The Elusive Manorial Lords by R.C.M. Bass. William was the father of 4 illegitimate children with Joan EXWORTHY; William (1806), Samuel (1808), Charlotte (1809) and Benjamin (1812). All of the children were baptised EXWORTHY in Bratton Clovelly. William was aged 71 when the first child William was born! Joan later married Thomas SHOPLAND and had further children but the 4 children with William WIMPEY later took the WIMPEY name when they married apart from bachelor Samuel who was buried WIMPEY in 1844. I live in Norfolk, England and a trip to any history centres in Devon is out of the question at the moment. Hopefully someone can direct me to getting a copy or has access to a copy of the Devon Historian who can give me a flavour of the article. Kind regards Malcolm Hitchens

    3. Hi Danial, There is a baptism at Sourton 06 Nov 1775 Agnes Kerslake daughter of Matthew and Ann. James Luxton, Grace's husband, was the brother of my 4th great grandmother, Catherine Luxton (baptised 01 May 1772 Highampton). Catherine Luxton married Richard YEO at Northlew 16 May 1796. 3. I am off track here as usual, in fact I am after a Susan MITCHELL d/o William according to her Marriage entry at Stoke Damerel to John Hole EDMUNDS in 1868. She is recorded as Susanna ROWLAND, widow and a witness was Elizabeth ROWLAND. For the life of me I cannot find anyone to match her at the moment in baptisms/census etc. Naturally I need her birth certificate but that is out of the question. According to 1881 Census Susanna says she was born c 1839 at Totnes In my travels I found a Joseph ROWLAND at South Brent who in 1851 is with a wife Mary Ann born c 1803 at Chudleigh. My theory was to try in a round about way to track down some ROWLANDS to see where they lead me. I am beginning to think that the information that Susanna gave when she married might be incorrect. Back to Mary Ann ROWLAND c 1803 at Chudleigh [1851] . According to Chudleigh baptisms on Genuki there is a Mary Ann DENLEY born 6 Jan 1803 and bapt 19 Jan 1803. Before I had looked at Chudleigh, I looked at my own fiche and found a Mary Ann base born daughter of Ann HOWE born 15 Aug 1803 and bapt 28 Aug 1803 at Chudleigh. I did not see this last Mary Ann on the baptisms at Chudleigh because according to Genuki they are MISSING between Feb 1803-Jan 1805. Has anyone out there been clever enough to find out who Mary Ann is, supposed wife of Joseph ROWLAND? I am still after Susan[na] MITCHELL supposed d/o William MITCHELL labourer. Many thank for any help/suggestions Regards Bev Edmonds in Oz

I am looking to see if I can establish a link between the descendants of this couple and my 3xGt grandparents Mary Ann Cochrane (born Silverton c.1816) and John Farrant whom she married at Lyme Regis in 1837. I am trying to establish Mary Ann's parentage - I think her father may be Sargeant Simon Cockram of Silverton who died at Waterloo in 1815, and I think that Simon's mother may have been the Mary that went on to marry John Kerslake. I believe John Kerslake and Mary Cockram to have had three children, Anne, Mary and Robert. I think Mary married Henry Player in Silverton in 1826 (hence my interest in that name), whilst Robert became a blacksmith and settled in Cullompton. I have drawn a blank so far on Anne. In addition to John (who I think lived c.1771-1841) there was a William Kerslake living in Silverton who was blacksmith like Robert (John Kerslake was a weaver), and speculatively I think both John and William may have been sons of Freeman Kerslake (c.1742-1823) and Mary Mullings, but have not traced the line any further back, my main interest in Silverton being Cockrams. 3. Hello Paul From: paul.hockie@talk21.com [mailto:paul.hockie@talk21.com] Sent: 19 February 2015 22:54 To: Peter J Richardson; devon@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DEV] 1803 Barnstaple Census > In your search for Kerslakes did you come across any in Uplowman or Huntsham in the 1700s or earlier My specific interest is in the John Kerslake who married Mary Cockram at Silverton on 2nd June 1800. Regards Peter
