    3. Hi Wayne I have the registers for Broad Clyst and started putting the families together many years ago. I have your Robert i 1763 as the son of Robert Batten and Jane Coles. Robert's father died as MR. Robert Batten in 1762 with the wife a possible Jane ? Don't have the mariage. Curious that your Robert and Ann did not have any children before 1805 ? They were maybe some place else ? I don't have a burial for the Robert who died in 1807/9? If I can help with some info then please do ask. Susan On a lovely warm breezy day! 3. Hi Steve: No mention of Francis STOOKE in the Bovey Booke- There is a mention (page 31) that "the Bovey Tracey Parish Church Choir passed a vote of condolence to their chairman Mr STOOKES and his family on the loss of their son Herbert". Referring to WW! Casualties. STOOKE is or was a fairly common Devon name as you'd know- in fact I was at school with a Claude STOOKES from Lustleigh back in the 1950's- and of course there's the famed STOOKE Charity at nearby Trusham >From Wikipedia: TRUSHAM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trusham In the church is a memorial to John Stooke which mentions a charity he set up for the church and the poor of nearby Bovey Tracey. The story, first recorded in 1709, goes that in 1646 an officer in the Royalist army was gambling at Bovey when he was cornered by Roundheads. He threw his bag of winnings to a servant, who threw them over a hedge, where they were found by Stooke, then a humble farmer's boy. Stooke's fortune was founded on his lucky find. Bovey's altar fund still receives a small annual sum from the charity. 3. Thank you Martin and Elizabeth.  I did visit with distant cousins at Carbonear 1-1/2 years ago and we've all run into the same brick wall.  William and Caroline's first child was born there in November 1847. There is some thinking that they may have been married in the fishing area of Massachusetts, but I haven't looked into that yet.  There is no record of their marriage in the Anglican church records in Newfoundland, but all of their children's baptisms are listed. Do either of you know what was considered "full age" for marriage back then? 3. Hi again Malcolm, The Pioneer Index also has a death of Elizabeth Wimpey at the Melbourne Hospital, age 80, father Clay, Reg No 1881/11101. The Argus of Thursday 13 October 1881, Page 10, has a notice of her inquest, apparently she had been living with her nephew Frederick Clay at Carlton (inner Melbourne suburb). The Pioneer Index has the marriage of Frederick Clay, born Devonshire, to Mary Jones, reg No 1872/4661. The Pioneer Index also has the births of several children to the couple in inner Melbourne suburbs, including John Henry at Carlton in 1878. It seems very likely that this Frederick was her nephew. John set up as a storekeeper in Fitzroy. There is a John CLAY) wife and 8 children on board the City of Manchester from London (09 March 1851) and Plymouth (24 March 1851). 3. Hi List Thank you Bev, Ray and Glenys for the information on William and Elizabeth WIMPEY. When they married in Heavitree, Devon in 1849 the marriage certificate states that their fathers were William WIMPEY and Zachariah CLAY. It does not say that William and Zachariah were deceased but William was and I believe that Zachariah was to. With the information you all supplied it seems that the CLAY family came from Petrockstowe in Devon. I have traced the family back to William and Margaret CLAY the parents of Zachariah. Betsey / Elizabeth's brother John Clay had a son Frederick and I have found on Ancestry that John and his wife Agnes had their last child Catherine Elizabeth CLAY in Melbourne Australia in 1853. John Clay died on the 16 Jul 1871 at Doncaster, Victoria, Australia. Bev, can you check for me to see if John CLAY and his family travelled with the WIMPEY's in 1853. Strangely I have been unable to find the CLAY's or WIMPEY's on the 1851 census in England or Scotland. Once again that's for your help. Kind regards Malcolm Hitchens

    3. Possible parents John (60, ag lab) & Jane (44) SQUIBB appear in 1841 West Lulworth census with children Sarah (8) and Jane (2). No sign of John and William in 1841, which might be consistent with them being fishermen. I recall reading that the 1841 census of West Teignmouth (I think) was short of men because so many were away fishing in Newfoundland waters. No sign of their wives in 1841 either, because both sons of 1825/27 would have been too young for marriage, and I find no such marriages on FMP after that date. Along with them were William's brother John, and his wife Jane. Records of William's and Caroline's deaths indicate they were born around 1826 to 1828. Is there anyone in this list familiar with my ancestors? I haven't found any birth or marriage information as of yet. 3. Hi , Ancestry has a Service record of No 552 Sergeant Samuel Westicott , 1st Btn 60th Regt of Royal Rifles HRH the Duke of Cambridge , Colonel . Sergeant Samuel Westicott by trade a glove cutter born in the parish of Upton Pyne , near Exeter, was attested for the 60th at Worcester 17th Feb 1827 aged 17 . Served 19 years 271 days of which he served abroad for 11years 262 days , at Mediterranean 1830-1840 , East Indies 1845-1846 , Lower Scind 1846 - 1847. His character and conduct have been " middling " and he was tried by regimental court martial in 1831 for breaking out of the defaulters room when confined therein . The medical report suggests that he is now unable to march , " he is also worn out and much debilitated from long military service and irregular life and the use of intoxicating liquor ". Judging by the dates this must be Samuel W the second born c 1810 . There is a Samuel Westacott son of John and Ann bapt at Upton Pyne in 1805 . And a bapt of a Samuel Westicott at St Nicholas , Gloucester son of Samuel and Ann in 1810 who seems to rather more fit the soldier`s details but for the declaration that he was born in Upton Pyne . Thomas Peeke is the OPC for Upton Pyne and he will be able to offer more on your original Samuel . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lillian Sprouting via" <devon@rootsweb.com> To: <DEVON@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 13, 2007 8:57 AM Subject: [DEV] Westicott > My G Great father Samuel Westicott was born Upton Pyne Devon abt 1805 his > parents were Samuel Westicott & Ann Pike/Pyke ..I have found he had > siblings and hoping someone will be able to help with info re. this > family..They were John 27/5/1792..Mary 30/3/1797.. 3. My great, great grand parents, William and Caroline Squibb arrived in the fishing village of Carbonear, Newfoundland around the mid 1840's.  Since there were many ships sailing from the Devon and Dorset areas for fishing in Newfoundland, and their descendents were all involved in that trade, I am assuming they were from that part of England. Along with them were William's brother John, and his wife Jane.  Records of William's and Caroline's deaths indicate they were born around 1826 to 1828. Is there anyone in this list familiar with my ancestors?  I haven't found any birth or marriage information as of yet. Ronald SquibbsFlorida (USA)
