I know it's been answered, but just in case you're interested in more details, I'm pretty sure the first photo was taken from Yorke Road (else from the fields along by that road). My parents were lucky enough to enjoy almost that view daily, living in the road for 15 years. It's hardly changed - see http://tinyurl.com/pte4dr6 . When I was visiting I would see cars pull up in front of their house frequently to photograph the view. Dear Monica, > So where was it? You can't leave us all with a mystery! My apologies - you are absolutely right ! Both views are indeed in South Devon. The first looks eastwards down a valley across Dartmouth and the river Dart to Kingswear in the far distance. The second one was taken from a boat on the Dart and is looking towards Stoke Gabriel. I doubt I could ever have solved these unaided. Best regards, Chris.

Dear members, Thank you to all those who responded to my query and especially to Graham Parnell and Chris Burgoyne who have most convincingly identified my locations of interest. I am most grateful. Best wishes, Chris.
I would agree that image 1 is Dartmouth taken from the top of the hill and looking over towards Kingswear. Image 2 I would say is taken on the Dart, possibly Stoke Gabriel but not sure on this one. Chris I had come to the same conclusion as Graham, but by elimination of all other possibilities rather than personal knowledge of Stoke Gabriel. I can't find anywhere else where the church is as close to the water, and it isn't Salcombe, as has been suggested - the Salcombe church is much bigger, and indeed Salcombe is much bigger. I can't find anywhere else in Devon, or Cornwall for that matter, that could fit. Chris Burgoyne PS - Are you the Chris Hogger I used to work with at IC? - If so, contact me off list! This is mostly a guess as I'm not hugely familiar with the area, but I'm wondering whether the little town in number 2 could be Salcombe? If you look on Google Earth, to me it seems to fit that this could be Salcombe viewed from around Southpool Creek - the church fits with being Holy Trinity Church in Salcombe, which you can see on Google Earth and appears to be in the right position. Chris The first looks to me like Dartmouth looking east across the Dart towards Kingswear, and the second Stoke Gabriel taken from a vessel on the River Dart. On the left shore are the remains of the Brixham sailing trawler "Glory" BM16, that went adrift in the river in 1938, sustained damage to her hull and towed to this position to decay. There's a church visible in 2close.jpg; Church towers are most often at the West end of churches, so your photo is a vie looking North - which would agree with your intuition that the village/town is on the South coast. (I think it is much less likely, though not impossible, that they were taken in North Devon or in Cornwall. What *is* certain is that they were taken in one of those two counties.) The two photographs may show the same place, one from afar and the other from much nearer, or they may not, but they were certainly taken with the same film. I have uploaded scans of them to the web at these addresses: http://www.effingham91.net/mystery1.jpg http://www.effingham91.net/mystery2.jpg http://www.effingham91.net/mystery2close.jpg (a close-up extracted from the second one) I would be most grateful if anyone could identify these places definitively, bearing in mind that these photos were taken nearly half a century ago. Hi David, Thank you so much for posting your find, in fact I am so happy that I am almost jumping out of my skin because I had a look at your name and whilst browsing down the page found some of my names. Goodness me!!! Yes, a wonderful sight. I will now have to go through every page on the site to make sure there are no more names imbedded in there. RIDGE was a major Bible Christian family in East Putford in the 1800's. So I thought I'd share this burial info I came across in the Laneast (Cornwall) Parish Register for 1788. April 6th 1788 - John RIDGE of EAST PUTFORD, Devon - found dead on Laneast (next word illegible). I have no connection, just know that this man might be important to someone. Dear Lizzie I am always interested in the Croydon Line. My family comes from Glanville Henry Croydon, son of William Northam Croydon who was the son of John Northam Croydon bn. 1758 in Totnes --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. http://www.avast.com
Bev, Thanks for posting this! What a great site. Lots of info on the family of John Tompson, who whose family were early settlers in New England. John Tompson of Preston Capes is a many times great-grandfather of mine. It's really a model for other parish-focused sites. David On Mar 21, 2015, at 9:41 PM, B. Dear Hoss This may not be of any interest to you as you are researching the Phillips family rather than the Croydons, but I have a connection to the latter family if you would like any further information about them. Lizzie Allen From: Hoss via Sent: Monday, 23 March 2015 15:47 To: devon@rootsweb.com Sorry Scott. I was referring to note you had written back in 2012 that I just came across while going through my old notes. I've been off my game for a while after some health setbacks. You stated in your note that you were looking for a tombstone for Miriam (Mariam) Phillipps of Totnes who died in late 1836. You had just read her will and had questions. I was hoping that our Phillips families might be related and I could gain more info on Elizabeth Phillips who died in 1845. She married William Northam Croydon in 1805 in Totnes. Hello Hoss, John Phillips and Nancy Phillips were witnesses at Elizabeth's wedding and in 1841 there is a Susanna Phillips aged 40 listed in the household with Elizabeth Croydon and family. None of these names appear in the Totnes baptisms on FindMyPast but they may help you find some relevant baptisms in one of the surrounding parishes. There is a burial at Totnes 1831 of a Nancy Phillips aged 42.
