    1. Re: [DEV] Obit lookup help for Hugh Cecil WALTON d. 1999, Mid Devon
    2. Paul Hockie via
    3. Amy, I had look on Findmypast . The only marriage it came up with was: First name(s) HUGH C Last name WALTON Marriage quarter 2 Marriage year 1982 Registration month - MarriageFinderT HUGH C WALTON married MARGARET P WORTHINGTON Spouse's last name WORTHINGTON District CAERNARVON There was only one possible child came up between 1982 and 1990. First name(s) REBECCA LESLEY C Last name WALTON Birth year 1984 Birth quarter 4 Registration month 12 Mother's last name WORTHINGTON District MACCLESFIELD County Cheshire Country England Volume 35 Page 945 The only birth for a Hugh C is in 1912 in China. There are number of Hughs across the country. With Margaret there were no Margaret P but several Margarets. I wonder if this was a late or second wedding or that Margaret was much younger. Rebecca may be a co-incidence One Rebecca L was married in 2003 and one in 2004. Findmypast only goes up to 2005. Obits are usually restricted to the local newspaper. I did find there is a Crediton Country Courier with others covering the area. It will be worth mailing them. Finally google "Hugh Cecil WALTON". There is an extract from the (London) Gazette about a wartime promotion to Lieutenant and one about the dissolution of a partnership in a driving school in Raynes Park, West London. This was in 1957. You may have to invest in certificates for more detailed information on the BDMs. Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: devon-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of J. 3. The Society of Genealogists "My Ancestor Was A Merchant Seaman" is a good buy at £9.99, available online from a number of sources. Remember much of the WW2 personal information is still restricted and may require an application ounder the Freedom of Information Act. Current FoI applications cost around £40. There is a memorial for merchant seamen opposite the Tower of London but I don't know if it has been indexed. If this is John Knowles of Ashburton then Ancestry has the facsimile text his PCC will in which he directs that"my collection of pictures drawings [???] prints busts and other works of art may be sold" and the proceeds invested for the lifetime benefit "of my dear friend Mrs Elizabeth Freeman" upon whose death the beneficiaries should be his brothers, etc. He nominates either of two auctioneers to handle the sale, whose sale catalogues might still be available. 3. Norman, You may have to take a broader approach to identifying Richard Full. A search of Findmypast for the name Full set it include "name variants" in the latter part of the 17th century throws up 100 births with a wide variety of spelling alternatives and there is still a large number of parishes not online for this period in Devon. Unfortunately any way forward will end up paper or microfilm based, which, I appreciate, is a problem. My first suggestion is to use a tool like Parloc (Google it) or Philimore's Atlas and establish which parishes are in a 5 to ten mile radius of Woodlands. The custom was that the marriage was in the brides parish and the husband took her off to his parish where she acquired "citizenship". 5-10 miles is my estimate of how far it's worth walking for a date. Also take into account the nearest marked town as a place where everyone visited and that those with money arranged marriages. Once you have a hit list of parishes then work your way through them. Your nearest LDS library can order many of these in microform but it may leave some that are only available in DRO. Next use the various rolls of taxes, oaths and similar such as the Hearth Tax, Windows Tax and Association Rolls. Some of these have been transcribed and are on line and some in book form by the Devon and Cornwall Record Society. which you may be able to find via interlibrary loans. Again, you will end up with a list of parishes to check in details. With regard to Thomas and Joan I would just keep this in mind. The names were very common at this time and most families I have in my ancestry from this time have Thomas and or a Joan. As well as the surname variations there were fore name variations, nicknames and abbreviations. It is now a process of eliminating the suspects starting with those you can find married and/or buried in the town they were born.. I did notice Richard was buried in Woodland and that the registers begin in 1560. He married Susanna Crossing in 1700 at Woodland & was the earliest of my Full ancestors I could find. In spite of help from listers, the Devon Family history Society & a professional researcher, no records could be found. One possibility raised was that his parents were Thomas & Joan Full, on the grounds Richard named two of his children Thomas & Joane. No details of these people have been found. I am about to compile some family stories, so I thought I would try just once more. I would be grateful for any help &,failing a miraculous breakthrough, It would help me if someone could explain the range of reasons his record is not available.
