Bev, Are you aware Sidney and Amy had a child Gwendoline Amy Joyce b 5/9/1912 in Dawlish (FMP). Was she also known as Amy? Was divorce a possibility or had Sidney and Amy been separated for some time and Amy only re-married after Sidney's death. Also on FMP are some merchant navy service records which include a photograph of Frank Bowden Holman. he seems to be registered in Southampton and until at least 1935. I had a look at Google. http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/visit/floor-plan/lusitania/peopl e/peoples-stories.aspx?id=15525 refers to a married daughter, Barbara. As both Frank and Amy were around 70 when they married, was there a previous marriage. However Barbara is quoted: "After a long and eventful life, he died in Southampton, Hampshire on 16th April 1963, in his 79th year! His body was later cremated in Southampton. His wife Amy had pre-deceased him in 1960. Still a treasured possession of his daughter Bobbie after all these years, is a pocket watch that Third Class Waiter Holman carried with him when he survived the sinking of the Lusitania, with the hands dramatically frozen in time and history, at 2.28 p.m.! Sources Register of Births, Marriages and Deaths, 1891 Census of England and Wales, 1901 Census of England and Wales, 1911 Census of England and Wales, Cunard Records, PRO BT 100/345, Bobbie Wiffen, Stuart Williamson, PRO BT 350." I think Barbara is Barbara M B Holman England and Wales Marriage Registration Index, 1837-2005 marriage registration: 1954 Southampton, Hampshire, England spouse: Eric G Wiffen To be more certain of the relationships you will need the marriage certificates of both couples. The 1953 certificate should show Amy Edmonds nee/formerly Kernick and her father should be the same on both. It would be worth trying to find Barbara, but there may be family secrets. Would say that probably yes Amy was the widow of Sidney Charles Edmonds. Probate for Sidney Charles Edmonds says Admin granted to Amy Holman (Wife of Frank Bowden Holman) this was the 29 Jan 1954. Also one of the sites which gives Frank Holman details says he married Amy Kernick. Although the only way to be absolutely 100% certain would be obviously to buy the marriage cert. I wouldn't worry too much about the small amount of time between death and marriage as I know it can happen, as my GreatGreatAunt did it. And have the certs to prove it. 1st Husband died 30 Jan 1931 Buried the 3 Feb 1931. She remarries the 12th Feb 1931. Tim Treeby . On 02/06/2015 02:51, B. As we are in the middle of Volunteer week, I would like to express my thanks to all Devon FHS volunteers for all their hard work. Without this wonderful group of people there would be no projects and publications, there would be no Tree House, there would be no group meetings, and all the other jobs that rely on volunteers. There certainly would be no Devon FHS without them. The Society is 40 years old next year, it would not exist without all the volunteers, past and present who have toiled to make the Society what it is today. SO A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL. Chairman Devon FHS
Hi: This is to report that a major first step in the upgrading of GENUKI has now been made. Virtually all the top level pages (i.e. those relating to the UK & Ireland as a whole), some 150 pages in all, have now been moved to Drupal. (These are pages that I have been responsible for in recent years, though my main responsibility is the set of 8000 Devon pages.) I was involved in the conversion effort, but the major work has been done by Phil Stringer, with help from Ken Greenslade. In particular, it is Phil who has developed the very sophisticated set of conversion tools that we have been using. The next stage will be the sets of country level pages. Only when the England pages have been converted will county level pages, such as my Devon pages, be tackled. GENUKI’s address remains http://www.genuki.org.uk. As you navigate around GENUKI you should be able to move seamlessly between old and new style pages. If you spot any errors, e.g. misformatted text, faulty links, in the UK & Ireland pages please let me know. (Links to pages outside GENUKI are marked with a little icon - a small square and upward pointing arrow. Links lacking this icon will be both to converted, and to as yet unconverted, GENUKI pages.) But time has moved on and a number of better ways have been developed for providing pages. These new ways, based on the use of "Content Management Systems", require much less technical expertise. So we are changing to the use of DRUPAL, a highly-regarded and widely-used Content Management Sytem, in order to ease the task of current GENUKI maintainers, and to make it easier for us to recruit additional people to maintain GENUKI. Hopefully we will be able to bring on board people who know about family history even if they have little prior experience of web page creation, as a lot of the computer expertise that has to date been involved in maintaining GENUKI pages is removed from the job. >> In the initial transition we are attempting to keep things as similar as possible to the previous look and feel of the GENUKI system, but there have to be a few minor changes as part of the process. What GENUKI users should see is more consistency across the counties and a new DRUPAL-based search facility. Then in the future we will have a framework that enables us to provide additional ways of viewing GENUKI's data. > > Unsurprisingly given its size (142,000 files - 6047 Mbytes at last count), the GENUKI site will be converted in stages, in fact starting at the top. Thus although for some months I have been doing some exploratory conversions of my Devon pages in the background, it will be a while before the actual conversion of GENUKI/Devon’s nearly 8000 files takes place. Meanwhile, they remain available at http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/ > > In this very first stage just the main GENUKI page (http://www.genuki.org.uk), and a small number of pages relating to the GENUKI organisation, have been moved into Drupal. When ever I see an upgrade for anything to do with GENUKI I always check out the details for Sheldon in Devon for which I am OPC. I would add that despite it says when I look up my details on GENUKI, that my email address is at BT internet. I have never had a BT Internet email address. My correct email address for the purposes of anyone wishing look ups for Sheldon, Devon is as it has always been terryblackmore@blueyonder.co.uk . If anyone has tried to contact me at BT Internet for information on Sheldon, Devon BDMs, they should retry contacting me at my correct email address. Regards Terry Blackmore OPC, Sheldon, Devon

Hi: The first fruits of the major task of upgrading the whole of GENUKI to use a “Content Management System” have just become visible. Quoting from: http://www.genuki.org.uk/news/main > The Genuki service has now been running for 20 years, and we are still using our original method of updating the pages. But time has moved on and a number of better ways have been developed for providing pages. These new ways, based on the use of "Content Management Systems", require much less technical expertise. Hello Len My only interest in the name MEDLAND, in Devon, is that my ggg-grandfather, James Jewell rented, then leased a tenement at a place called Medlands Upcott in about 1780. I wonder if this is connected with your Medland family in any way. Hi Listers; Is there anybody out there who has an interest in the MEDLAND family of Jacobstowe and Exbourne. Over the years I have collected together an amount of information on the family, but not much of it links together. Looking to liaise with someone who also has an interest in MEDLAND, and exchange data. Best Regards Len Heyward
Len, I'm very interested in the Medlands in Exbourne & Jacobstowe. Richard Brock of Jacobstowe (1715-1781) married Sarah Medland of Jacobstowe (1717-1792) in Exbourne in 1740. I tentatively have the Medlands back another 4 generations. Suggest we compare notes off-list. Hello Amy Paul has more than duplicated my brief off-list suggestion, except I forgot to suggest you might also ask Crediton Cemetery who paid for the headstone and if anyone might have reserved space in the same plot, because that memorial has a blank section at the bottom, as if intended for the inclusion of a son or daughter who is/was still alive when the photo was added to Find A Grave in November 2012. Watch that space!. But the headstone photo raises some interesting questions worth raising on-list. Major Hugh Cecil WALTON was 89 when he died in 1999, consistent with his birth in Hong Kong ca 1910/11, while Margaret Pat WALTON (known as Pat) was 75 when she died in 1900, indicating her birth ca 1915, for whom FreeBMD has a probable birth in Q2 1915 of WORTHINGTON Margaret P, mother = BARLOW, in Chorlton, Lancs. If, as seems very likely, Paul has correctly identified the marriage of Hugh C WALTON and Margaret P WORTHINGTON in Caernarvon RD in Q2 1982, then Hugh would have been about 72 and Margaret about 67, so they could not have been the parents of the Rebecca WALTON born in 1984, otherwise Pat would be in the Guinness Book of Records! But the gravestone describes Pat as "wife and mother", supporting Paul's speculation that this was her second marriage, for which she evidently used her maiden name, and quite possibly also Hugh's second marriage, but that would not confirm Pat as the mother of Hugh's child(ren), if indeed he had any. The gravestone identifies Pat as SRN QAIMNS and the London Gazette records that on 11 August 1947 Margaret Patricia WORTHINGTON was granted a commission as a Sister in Queen Alexandria's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve, implying she was demobbed after wartime service and was still unmarried at that time. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/38063/supplement/4189/data.pdf FreeBMD, Ancestry and FMP have the following marriages: Hugh C WALTON and Lavinia GOODY in Wandsworth, London in Q3 1939, and deaths of several Lavinia WALTON between 1963 and 1982, Thomas McCONNELL and Margaret P WORTHINGTON in Southend RD in Q1 1954, and deaths of several Thomas McCONNELL between 1962 and 1981, for which you can easily find several possible children by searching on birth surname and mother's maiden name (whom I do not name because of the living persons convention). There is also a marriage of Anthony E COLSON and Margaret P WORTHINGTON in Kettering RD in Q1 1948, but he seems to have died much later in 2005. You might also look for any 1982 WALTON-WORTHINGTON marriage announcement in the Devon and/or Caernarvon press. Hugh Cecil WALTON (service number 153600) appears to have joined the Royal Artillery in 1927 about the age of 17 (FMP), attended Officer Cadet Training Unit on the outbreak of WWII, receiving his Emergency Commission as Lt in October 1940, confirmed in December 1946, and was promoted to Major in October 1953 (London Gazette). Ancestry's database of British Phone Books (up to 1984) has several records for H C WALTON living at 31 Tower Gardens, Deep Lane, Crediton between 1978 and 1983, both before and after his 1982 marriage to Pat. According to Google hits including StreetView, number 31 is a modest terraced house on a 1960s/70s-style development, which was sold in July 2000 (possibly by the Walton executor?) and again in July 2001. If you do not have access to FMP you can currently get 1 month World for 1 US$ at https://www.findmypast.com/pay?promocode=fmpcensus&utm_source=crecs_em but remember to cancel the auto-renew box. Have looked in the Tiverton Gazette for 1990 (This covers Crediton - editorial is much the same for the Tiverton & Crediton editions) No mention of Margaret Walton in the November 1990 issues (6th, 13th, 20th, 27th). Will look at the Oct/Nov 1999 issues next time I'm in Tiv. Chris Whitehead -----Original Message----- From: J. Update. Ancestry (UK) has a photo of the gravestone via Find A Grave. It mentions a family. They also have the 1911 census with Hugh aged 5mths living in barracks in Honk Kong. Search https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/ for his will. WALTON HUGH CECIL 17 March 2000 370815 29 October 1999 Grant only Bristol Grant is Letters of Administration but may have been taken out by his next of kin. It will cost £10 There is also more information on Findmypast including military service.
