Name William Coleman Hamlyn Christening Place ILSINGTON,DEVON,ENGLAND Father's Name John Hamlyn Mother's Name Elizabeth Plus William James HAMBLYN at Dartmouth Presbyterian Quoting Len Heyward <lhe6246@bigpond.com>: > Hello Listers; > > Apart from the many other Devon families I have in my data, I also descend > out of HAMLYN. > > I am trying to find out more information on William HAMLYN who was born in > Widecombe in the Moor about 1833. 3. Hi List I am having all sorts of trouble getting this computer to talk to Rootsweb, so am trying to piggy back off Martins e-mail to Len. This is what I sent Len about 10 minutes ago. I do hope it gets through. Bev I had previously sent Len this e-mail > Speaking of HAMLYN, I notice that a John HAMLYN, aged 54, Single, > Mechanic, immigrated to Queensland, Australia on the "Royal Dane" having > left London > 16 Aug 1871, arriving in Brisbane 4 Dec 1871. The 10 minutes ago this reply to Len Len I took a wild guess and came up with this which is a possible match [not sure if they are yours or not, but just in case.] John HAMLYN died 27 Mar 1895 Toowoomba buried 28 Mar 1895 aged 77 - at Toowoomba & Drayton Cemetery s/o Wife Sarah died 2 Nov 1904 aged 76 Toowoomba buried 3 Nov at Toowoomba & Drayton Cemetery They could have died near Toowoomba, because at that time there were not too many cemeteries around and lots of people who lived nearby gor buried in Toowoomba & Drayton, which is the oldest Cemetery here You will note that John's age matches almost with the immigration one I sent. Maybe the " Single" bit was a mistake. See other deaths here https://www.familyhistory.bdm.qld.gov.au/ and https://www.familyhistory.bdm.qld.gov.au/ The John Drewe HAMLYN who died 18 Nov 1890 died at Mayborough, after a long and painful illness, was the eldest son of John HAMLYN, of Harley Vale, Geham. Geham is about 20 klms from Toowoomba, so it maybe that the John who died 1795 is that John and that he would have died geham [perhaps] then buried in Toowoomba. Darling Downs Gazette 29 Jan 1879 Also 20 Jan 1879 at the Albert Mills, Highfields [my Note: nr Toowoomba]by the rev. T. Thatcher, of Gympie, Thomas, second son of John HAMLYN of Hartley Vale, to Emily Elizabeth CROCKER, daughter of the late John HAMLYN, of Devonshire, England Regards Bev --------------------------------------------------

    3. Len - Not a family of interest to me but I searched around and found no record of such a William's baptism, not in FMP's Devon Baptisms, but Ancestry has William Hamlyn in the 1841 England Census Age: 9 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1832 Where born: Devon, England Civil Parish: Widecombe in The Moor Piece: 229 Book: 15 Folio: 6 Page Number: 6 Household Members: Name Age Fancras Hamlyn 45 Blacksmith Elizabeth Hamlyn 40 John Hamlyn 15 Sarah Hamlyn 15 Aaron Hamlyn 11 William Hamlyn 9 Sibylla Hamlyn 5 Avis Hamlyn 5 Mary Hamlyn 2 Image reads as Pancras. Have you perhaps found him mistranscribed as Thomas elsewhere? See http://blacksmiths.mygenwebs.com/devonhm-1.php#H That William is still living with his parents in 1851, when all of the family are recorded as born in Widecombe. I don't find any of those siblings baptised at Widecombe but FMP does have Pancras baptised there in 1795, but no Elizabeth Coleman born there. It seems rather unlikely that Pancras and family lived elsewhere before he returned to Widecombe very soon before 1841. Perhaps he became nonconformist so not in the CofE parish register? Or is this perhaps enough for you to eliminate this William? 3. I know the story - she's famous in England - (but very few people would know the name of the ship hat was wrecked) But - Northumberland is long way from Exeter. Who came up with the idea for the memorial? (the Exeter Civic society page doesn't say) Are there any others? Had the Duke of Northumberland any connection with St Thomas's? Or Robert Smeddle? I think you're probably right - her fame was nationwide after all. 3. Hi Chris I have no idea re the connection with Exeter but there is a piece in the Newspapers. Maybe one of the persons she recued was from Exeter. The Dundee Courier & Argus and Northern Warder (Dundee, Scotland), Tuesday, December 04, 1877; Grace Horsley DARLING who, with her father, Mr. W. DARLING, took charge of the Longstone Lighthouse etc etc., the weather was so dangerous etc they saved five of the crew and four of the deck passengers. http://callisto.ggsrv.com.rp.nla.gov.au/imgsrv/FastFetch/UBER2/0000474_18440926_0002-F?&highlight=00ff00+0.7+4342+6679+115+31+4476+6671+154+44+4649+6666+159+41&scale=0.33&crop=856+102+790+3073&format=jpg She may have been named after the following Grace Horsley DARLING The Stirling Observer (Stirling, Scotland), Thursday, September 26, 1844; pg. 2; Issue 422. British Library Newspapers, Part III: 1741-1950.
