Jane I found no one with a name Archie or Archibald. I wonder if Archie was a nickname, especially if he had red hair and named that after the comic strip " Archie ". [Was that comic strip around in 1945?] Roz, might have better luck. Thank you all for trying to help re the people who've been granted the freedom of the city. I'll explain how my quest has come about. Many of you may know of a website Exeter Memories - rather a good site where people have added their memories of Exeter (I've done so myself). Anyway Exeter Memories now has a Facebook page and a number of us were "chatting" and remembered a bus conductor who was a real character and his name was Archie. I went on to say that my mother had told me that he'd been granted the freedom of the city along with a couple of other men for bravery during WWII. If you could help Roz, I'd be most grateful, but I don't know anything other than the man's name was Archie (short for Archibald I assume) and would have been given sometime around 1945 I would think. Most grateful Best wishes, Jane PS - sorry for delay in response but I've been away for a few days. > From: RozMH@talktalk.net > To: devon@rootsweb.com > Date: Mon, 25 Nov 2013 07:15:35 +0000 > Subject: Re: [DEV] Exeter people/groups granted freedom of the city > > Bev I was offering to look-up for Jane - I have the book. > Thanks anyway. > > Roz > > -----Original Message----- > From: devon-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com] On > Behalf Of B. Dear Elizabeth, FreeREG has a marriage listing of Francis HAMMETT & Elizabeth DAVY dtd 31 Jul 1739 in Ashreigney. Children listed as baptized under HAMMETT / HAMET / HAMMET are: William in 1744 in Beaford Mary in 1747 in Ashreigney Samuel in 1748 in Ashreigny Mary in 1750 in Ashreigny Susanna in 1755 in Ashreigney Under HAMMOND Susanna in 1758 in Beaford Dorothy in 1762 in Beaford Unfortunately no Elizabeth. But there is William, Mary and Susanna. Would have never thought of looking under HAMMETT. -----Original Message----- From: elizabeth howard Sent: Monday, November 25, 2013 3:28 AM To: devon@rootsweb.com Subject: [DEV] HAMMOND Research Hi, Beaford has an OPC , if you go to genuki/devon/beaford you can contact her from there . Greg Sheere`s excellent transcription of Ashreigney bapts 1754 -1812 has a Susanna Hamett , dau of Francis and Elizabeth , bapt A , April 1755. In the marriages there is a John Hammet, of Winkleigh marrying in A in 1745 and again in 1745/6 . Susanna is buried 18th Nov 1755. No doubt the OPC for Beaford will be able to check the marriage entry so that the possible muddle between Hammett and Hammond can be clarified . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lance L. Hello Lance, When a person fell on hard times in the 18th.Century, the parish relief had to be carried by the parish which was responsible for that person. That parish was normally the parish in which the unfortunate person was born. In this case it would appear to be Beaford. The whole family would be deemed to belong to Beaford even if the wife and children were born in any other place. The reason being that the people of his adopted parish should not carry the cost of the parish from which he came. There were reasons why the parish in which the poor unfortunate person was living, could have accepted the right of belonging. Sadly in this case, that did not apply. Dennis Bramble.
What I can't figure out is why some DEVON-L mail goes in my Inbox while others go in the junk mail. All looks the same to me. -----Original Message----- From: Roz Hickman Sent: Monday, November 25, 2013 7:15 AM To: devon@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DEV] Exeter people/groups granted freedom of the city Bev I was offering to look-up for Jane - I have the book. This does sound like a removal order, if you can obtain a copy from the NDRO it may give you all sorts of information. A potted history of the father to establish his parish of settlement - in this case Beaford. Families moved around as they obtained work but if they lost the job, for whatever reasons, they could find themselves homeless as often the cottage went with the job (Tied Cottages). It was then the job of the parish Overseers of the Poor to "examine" each case to determine where the responsibility for helping the family, lay. It is these examinations that survive and they are very interesting. Roz Hickman OPC Otterton, Colaton Raleigh, Harpford and Bicton

I'm most likely wrong, but I know what I think that this might possibly be, a removal order under poor laws as the local village couldn't support the family. Might not be so in this case, but I have seen reports of them being implemented before. -----Original Message----- From: Lance L. Hi: I suggest that this posting from Paul provides an appropriate (perhaps belated) opportunity for me to ask that this thread, which is not at all specific to Devon genealogy) now cease. If you want to carry it on, please do so via direct email, NOT on DEVON-L. Cheers Brian Randell On 24 Nov 2013, at 11:27, <paul.hockie@talk21.com> wrote: > I have just read the Irish judgement. I have just read the Irish judgement. It is an Irish domestic judgement on what are the plaintiff's rights to anonymity in a civil case. The Irish Constitution says none and the judge upheld this, only commenting that, although this was an unusual case, the constitution is clear that cases must tried in open court with all parties identified and that newspapers had a constitutional right to report, fully, on any case tried in open court. Lets get this straight no where did I state it was a hoax. What I said was in my exact words "It has been thought at various times to be a hoax". People should get their facts right before they post to this list.
