    1. [DEV] William Samuel KING and Minnie EDMONDS
    2. elizabeth howard
    3. Hi Bev. in a way you are right , they did emigrate but only as far as Wales . The 1911 for Swansea shows Wm Sam King, 30, house painter, b Totnes, with Minnie , 26, b Dartington, married 2 yrs , no children. living at 16 Norfolk St, Mt Pleasant , Swansea . William Samuel joined the Labour Corps from 78 Rhondda St , Swansea aged 35 yrs 5 mnths , he is 5ft 5 inches, has blue eyes and fair hair , his chest measurement is 34 1/2 inches and he has no distinctive marks , he was a painter , and married with one child . 1st Dec 1915. His wife Minnie Edmunds King whom he married in Staverton on June 8th 1908, is his next of kin and his child is Leslie William b Oct 15th 1912. There is a further note asking for his correct Labour Corps number, saying he was transferred from 5th Bedford Regt Agric Coy on 11th April 1917. He was discharged " no longer physically fit for war service" in Dec 1917 . and seems to have been in hospital in Chatham , his character is good. His disability is given the number 164. By July 1918 the widow of Pte William S King is awarded a pension of 20/5 a week for herself and one child following the cessation of Pte King`s payment. " I am directed by the Ministry of Pensions to inform you that the death of 179850 Pte Wm S King , 337 H S Coy , Labour Corps is regarded as due to disease contracted on or commencing on active service . " . Sadly it seems from another page of these records that disability 164 is " General paralysis of insane". Further it originated in Sept 1917, at Chatham, he was " admitted to Fort Pitt 25 Oct 1917, very talkative, noisy, ? in a state of mental disease sisnce admission, he has developed exalted and grandiose ideas and is difficult to restrain . " A further note says that the disability was not so caused by war service but was constitutional . A sad tale ....do you know what happened to Minnie and her son ? life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "B. If that name was messed up so bad, there's got to be several others from that section of the registry as well. If you're searching for ancestors in Plymstock in the 1650 - 1660 time period, it behooves you to look at the images and study that vicar's handwriting very carefully. I've seen similar handwriting in other registries of that time period as well. 3. I found a gross transcription error in FMP's records the other day, and thought I'd share in case anyone else in the world has been searching for descendants of George Tuner and Grace Lange... or, conversely, searching for the wife/marriage of Charles Lawrie/Lawry of Plymstock. His name is Charles Lawrie (Lawry) He married Grace Lange (Lang) 10/21/1654 in Plymstock Came across a son named Christopher, b. 1/5/1657 There are more children, just haven't had time to put them together yet. 3. Morning all Charles CORNISH married Anne Batty Edmonds 1865 in Plymouth. I do not have their marriage certificate which would really, really help, but being a little on the ikey side, I thought someone else may have this Charles and know something of him. I think Ann may have died in 1867 and is buried in Ford Park A Charles CORNISH [widower] marries a Celia ELLIS 13 Apr 1869 at Charles [I have this image] He is a bootmaker s/o John CORNISH, bootmaker. 1871 census confirms that he is from Werrington [actually born/living at Yealmbridge in 1826] with wife Celia and her mother. They have a son William T. E. CORNISH registered as William Thomas E. CORNISH. My thoughts are that he could be William Thomas Edmonds CORNISH [I wish] I can find no suitable trace of them in 1881-1891, so did they all die or immigrate? Bev

    3. Hi Bev, just looking at the image for the marriage 8th Feb 1810 William Frazer , Royal Artillery , and Elizabeth Beer, of this parish. by Banns, by John Gandy, vicar, William Frazer signs and so does Elizabeth. Witnesses John Beer, Mary BeerX her mark , and James Boulter. who signs other marriages so may be the parish clerk .. William Frazer also has a middle name crossed out . On closer inspection I think he just made a blodge of writing his surname , it looks like Farser or similar . There is the burial of a William Frazer , 2yrs 1 month in Aug 1812 . Stoke Damerel . Wm senior if in the RA at this time could have been killed anywhere This is mid Napoleonic wars . I don`t see him in the NA catalogue but that isn`t to say he isn`t somewhere . However there is a William Fraser , Royal Artillery , dates of service 1810-1886 . That strikes me as being unlikely to serve for perhaps 100yrs . It is probably the series dates for this WO 76/363/312 . Richard Hocking Edmonds signs Richard and Mr Harker the curate should have corrected this entry . but suddenly Elizabeth Beer , late Frazer, can no longer sign her name . And it is a Wm Beer who witnesses. with Mary Burt. Stoke Damerel Dec 1821. Guessing Elizabeth Beer is the dau of John and Mary , and Wm may be a brother or even a young son ? life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "B. He was killed in WW1 and is listed on the Lynton War Memorial. Does anyone have any connections and/or interest? For some reason, he did not live with his parents but with an aunty in Cornwall. 1. Re: [DEV] Re John Blake and Jane Hooper, Plymouth, Devon
    2. Paul Hockie
    3. Stuart, While I basically agree with your assumptions on age of marriage and number of children, I have examples in my family of early marriage and children in a number of parishes. Young marriages occurred to secure family fortunes and land. They also happened because of "rustic" behaviour of youth. This is usually obvious from the date of marriage and the first born. With regard to the children, I have found that agricultural labourers (and sometimes farmers) moved from farm to farm following the work. They were often employed via the hiring fairs in the market towns and changed farms regularly until more permanent positions opened. This had the effect of balancing jobs with labour in a wider economy and mixing the gene pool. The effect is more obvious in the 19th century when a labourer and his circumstances can be viewed across the census, with a family being born in batches across 2-3 villages. You do not say what tools you have been using to research. A lot of 18c Devon is not yet online and the registers should be searched starting with those surrounding North Moulton. Try and find a copy of Parloc software on the web. This lists 39 parishes in a 10 mile radius of North Moulton. I am sure Jane was worth a 10 mile walk. Paul -----Original Message----- From: devon-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of STUART BLAKE Sent: 10 December 2013 03:49 To: devon@rootsweb.com Subject: [DEV] Re John Blake and Jane Hooper, Plymouth, Devon My ancestors, John Blake and Jane had three children in North Molton, 1767, 1770, and 1772. The only marriage someone has found was to a Jane Abbot in Barnstable in 1770. This can not be correct, as they had a child in 1767, and John would have only been 19 at the time of his first child. It is probable, but in my research, not likely. Another concern, is that they only had 3 children. Again, probable, but not likely. I have done extensive research all over Devon, and even in Somerset county, but have come up empty handed. I have come across a marriage for a Jno. Blake and Jane Hooper on 15 July 1753, in Plymouth (St. Andrews Parish.). I see they had some children there. This marriage fits perfectly into the parameters that I am working with. However, as those records I have access to, are more time consuming to read and go through, I was wondering if anyone could give me some input and/or guidance. Was it common back then to be married in Plymouth, and then travel that far (to North Molton)? I say that far, as it is from one end of Devon to the opposite end, but for poor hungry people, that probably wasn't far to go to work. What type of records are there to verify where one went, or where one came from? Is there a Hooper family member that may know of this marriage and shed some light on it for me? Am I looking up the wrong 'tree’? As I don't live in England, I am not sure of the customs at this time, and wonder if I am wasting my time searching this marriage out, but so far, it is the only John Blake that married a Jane, prior to 1767 that I can find. I should clarify that I do not as yet have empirical, irrefutable proof that she was christened in Plymstock... and I doubt that I ever will. However, the Lang name is VERY prominent all the way from the beginnings of the 1695 - 1747 register and at least up through the end of that century. Their roots run deep in Plymstock. That's not to say they don't elsewhere... has anyone done one of these "one-name study" things on the Lang name? Last night I finished going through the 1695 - 1747 registry and have pieced together the Lang family as best I can (until I have time to go through the other registries). There is an Anne Lang born to Henry Lang 21 Nov. 1735. That would have put her roughly 25 - 26 years old at the time she married Phillip. She was listed as "of this parish, spinster" on the Banns. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-14546-633-72?cc=1804330&wc=MMBD-PFS:515723165 And that's all I have at this point as evidence that she belongs to the Plymstock parish. >And they managed ,as we still do here in the UK , to  >move about in fall or winter and spring  !!!!  we aren`t  >talking 100s of miles here .. True. However, they didn't have cars with heaters, either, and a gravely ill family member or a frail infant would have been enough incentive to wait until spring... I would think, even under the threat of an order of removal. Of course, this is all conjecture. I do not yet have enough evidence to form any solid conclusions. Perhaps I should choose my words more carefully in the future so as not to make myself seem so certain. At this point, I do not believe that Richard Page was a son of Philip and Ann. But I'm not ruling it out, either. I simply want to exhaust all possibilities before giving up on the idea altogether. I am told that there are other nearby parishes that have a heavy dose of Lang blood in them as well. Until I have time to sift through all of them I am going off the assumption that Ann (Anne) Lang was christened in Plymstock in 1735. Sure would like to find access to court/poor records for Brixton and Plymstock... Best Regards, Blaine

I would be happy to do that, especially as I have recently found that I have ancestors from Washfield. In any case, I hope you will be sending the results to Brian Randell for inclusion in GENUKI.
