Hi, Ancestry`s Criminal registers 1791-1892 shows a number of John Bishops being tried over the years in the Devon assizes , the one in 1831 is at the Lent Assizes and is accused of " Breaking within the curtilage and stealing " I am not sure exactly what that means but he got Life . So his crime seems to be in a different category . I checked the 1841 census in case I could find him in Exeter Gaol but without success. There may be Gaol registers somewhere , DRO will know . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Diana Stevens" <diagramdiana@iinet.net.au> To: <devon@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 28, 2013 1:07 PM Subject: [DEV] John BISHOP convicted at Exeter 1831 > Seasons greetings to all. > > For years I have been trying to find out what happened to my > GG-Grandfather John BISHOP. Afternoon to all, I do hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, we took the van to Copeton Waters and nearly died in the heat. Arrived in a sweltering 38° and did nothing for a week but flop about in over 35° every other day, tomorrow is supposed to be worse so we packed up early and came home. We did see the flooding on TV in England so hope that none of our Listers were badly affected. Thank you to everyone who helped me with George Reed SEARLE, especially Tim who tracked him down. I did take my 3 Towns CD with me and I did think I had found more connections and who the likely parents could have been. Unfortunately where we went there was no Internet service so had to twiddle my thumbs and grumble over this. But I did get to clean up a lot and do some merging/unmerging etc. Regards Bev
Hi Diana, According to the British Newspaper Archive which is where FMP take their Newspaper Articles from. The North Devon Journal for 24 Mar 1831 is Missing. The BNA does let you search for a specific paper by date. It is a PPV site but i use it to track what papers i might want then use FMP to read the article. Tim Treeby. For years I have been trying to find out what happened to my GG-Grandfather John BISHOP. He disappeared ca 1830-1831. I have now found in Woolmer's Exeter and Plymouth Gazette of 19 Mar 1831 the Calendar for the Lent Assizes in Exeter which includes a John BISHOP age 27 (he was bap 10 Apr 1803 at Teigngrace) accused of burglary. I have also found the sentence/acquittal of 5 of the other 6 burglars on the list in the E&PG of 26 Mar 1831 but not John. First of all, Happy New Year to everyone! I know it’s a long shot but maybe somebody has come across a diary or journal about the areas around these parishes. I know of no relevant published books and have trawled through “British manuscript diaries of the 19th century: an annotated listing”, to no avail. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. I’ll be in the UK next summer so could read any manuscripts then- if there are any! Beth Drummond from NZ

Hello List, We have traced our HOLMES ancestry to Harpford Parish, Devon, where a Robert HOLMES married a Mary Bishop, 15 April, 1770. Their children: Thomas 1771 - 1850; Elizabeth 1772 - 1772; Ann 1773; John 1776 - 1844; Robert 1778; James 1782 Both Thomas and James went over to Seaton/Beer Parish, Devon, where James married Lucy Puttam, 1808, and Thomas married Ann Batstone Miller (Widow), 1801. Ann died and he later married Mary Ann Drew, of Colyton Parish. Thomas and Ann had: Thomas - 1802; James - 1804; Mary Ann - 1806 - Robert 1808. Thomas and Mary Ann had: Elizabeth 1816 - 1883; Willaim 1817; Noah 1819 - 1900; Fannie Bishop 1821 -: John 1823 - ; Henry Bishop - 1825; Joseph - 1828; Charlotte - 1835 James and Lucy had: Elizabeth - 1809 - 1866; Robert - 1811; Lucy - 1815 - 1891; James - 1816 - 1882; Wiliam Puttam - 1818 - 1875; Mary 1820; Thomas - 1822; Charlotte 1825 - 1892; Samuel 1826 - 1826; Sarah - 1827 John Holmes married Hannah Patch of Venn Ottery,Devon and they had several children, in Harpford, and Venn Ottery. No additional information discovered regarding Robert Holmes, son of Robert and Mary, Nee Bishop. Any ideas, information, contacts, will be very much appreciated. A Happy New Year is wished for all. I have just updated my personal Mitchelmore web site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mitchelmore/Mitchelmore following a recent discovery that takes us back to Peter MUCHMORE born about 1630 in Stokenham, Devon. I'd be happy to hear from anyone interested in the history of the M*CH*MOREs or the South Hams area of Devon who may be able to correct or add to my information. Hi: Please EVERYONE, adhere to the stricture in the GENUKI/Devon's "Frequently Asked Questions" - "If you wish to complain or comment unfavourably about some other subscriber please do so directly to the subscriber and/or to the list owner or moderators - NOT to the entire list, which just exacerbates the problem. . . Similarly, the list is not an appropriate place for critical comments about archives and other organisations, e.g. regarding their policies concerning access to information they possess which would be useful to genealogists." Blaine: The best way to find what you are looking for is to visit the appropriate record office and sit with the catalogue, then order in the documents you think would do the trick, then spend countless hours going through each one. The staff will assist you to find the right documents. This is not so hard as you think. We visited the record office on a number of occasions from Canada. We fly in and out of Exeter airport, so make a point of being at Exeter however many days ahead of flight as we think we need to research the documents we are after. We find that combining holidays with research it works out a lot cheaper than ordering cert after cert and getting nowhere fast!!. Personal research is the only way to find what you want. They say only 1% of documentation is on the internet - and I'd believe it. You have to go where the records are. Save up and go to Devon Record office (either of them) as soon as you can. If you live in UK there is no excuse not to. Sher Canada

Hi, I should be munching through the first of many boxes of Christmas chocs, but am so incensed at your remarks about DFHS website and organisation that I have to say you are completely wrong Of all the counties in England , Devon has probably the best online resources of any . Your best bet is to buy the cd of the Deanery of Plympton giving the bmb of those parishes which include Brixton, Plymstock and Plympton ....It is perfectly clear what is on the cd from the various parish pages on genuki which list exhaustively the dates and events covered for each parish . This below is on the Briston genuki page. An index of baptisms, marriages and burials in the Deanery of Plympton. with photographs of the churches and extracts from White's Devonshire Directory 1850 and The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868), CD-ROM, Exeter, Devon FHS (2007). I have searched A2A exhaustively, and only come up with 1 entry that may possibly be related. I am specifically looking for court documents to try and prove or disprove parentage of an illegitimate child, born either in Brixton or Plymstock in 1772 - 1774. This catalogue seems to be what I need for Brixton: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=028-723&cid=0#0 but it doesn't go back far enough. I can't seem to find a like collection for Plymstock. I have found nothing on GENUKI for the parishes I am interested in. None of them have an OPC that I am aware of, unless they fall under a larger parish. I have googled my heart out looking for a searchable index of the Brixton registry covering 1727 - 1812, to no avail. Neither FamilySearch nor FMP have this registry. All I have left to try, as near as I can tell, are the paid sources. I looked into the DFHS some time ago, I think they might have some information that would be useful to me... But their website is poorly done, and doesn't give enough information. I seem to recall sending an email asking for more information on what is contained on the CD's they offer, and never got a reply back. I have learned that I can access Ancestry.com for free through my local LDS FH library, but I haven't yet had the opportunity to get there. THanks for all the help. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Hi Everyone: Let me second Maureen's comments. I'm away from home, computer, GENUKI/Devon and the Devon Wills Project for a few days, enjoying a Christmas Break with my wife on the beautiful Northumbrian coast - having temporarily (almost) completely caught up with the efforts of the numerous splendid volunteers who keep providing me with information for GENUKI/Devon and DWP! Merry Christmas everyone.
