George did re-marry after the death of Jane Paulina SEARLE [nee O'CONNELL]. In 1863 in Plymouth he married Frances Winifred ALEXANDER. I think he died in 1903 and she in 1916. >From the above subject which I came across by chance, I note the names of BARTON and STOOKE. >From my local history research the two families of BARTON & STOOKE were well entrenched at Kingskerswell, Devon. The BARTON family had two farms. My home is just round the corner from one of them at North Whilborough which is a hamlet in the parish. Another George SEARLE married a Jane Paulina O'CONNELL Mar Q 1854 at East Stonehouse. Jane died one year later and she is also of Edgecumbe St, and is also buried at Ford Park . One of George Elliott's sons Alfred Augustus is also of Edgecumbe St and is also buried at Ford Park Would anyone please be able to see if there is a marriage on FMP for this George SEARLE and and Jane Paulina O'CONNELL in 1854. I suspect that this George could be the s/o George and Sarah SEARLE. Regards and thanks so much. Bev
Sorry about the duplicate message. I sent it at 1854 local time from the wrong address. When it did not come back I realised my mistake and sent from the correct address at 2107. It came back at 2110, the first email came back at 0205 this morning. It did not bounce back to me and came through from the wrong email address though this reply mysteriously has the correct address. I don't understand how Roots Web operates these days (long headers bewilder me but it did come via the bounce mechanism). I apologise Terry if you had to redirect it. Thanks to all who replied. Hi Elizabeth Thanks for pointing that out. That record came up when I searched on Ancestry but in my excitement at finding him in the Prison Hulk list I missed it! Wikipedia says the curtilage of a house is the land surrounding it (with a stack of provisos). Maybe the fact that he did not enter the dwelling is why he got Life. All the other burglars listed got sentenced to Death though one had the sentence commuted to Life. Now all I need to do is find where the house and curtilage were situated. Hi Joy Thanks for that, it certainly sounds like the one I found in the newspaper. I have not done any convict research for a long time and I did not know about that site. It is interesting that someone has added details of his death, I shall try to contact them. I still need a bit more information about him to convince me he is the right one. My John BISHOP was probably living in West Teignmouth as some years later this was his place of Settlement on the Removal Order for his 'son' John Oxford BISHOP as stated by his mother Maria GREENSLADE, though in fact JOB was illegitimate. Hi Elizabeth: You'll find *lots* of items listed under Biography and History on the Northam page in GENUKI/Devon - and a few items in the Buckland Brewer page, but not much in the West Alvington page Cheers Brian Randell [Please excuse brevity - sent from my iPad] email: Brian.Randell@ncl.ac.uk tel: +(44)191 222 7923 On 28 Dec 2013, at 20:00, "Elizabeth Drummond" <e_m_drummond@yahoo.co.nz> wrote: > First of > all, Happy New Year to everyone! > I know it’s > a long shot but maybe somebody has come across a diary or journal about the > areas around these parishes. Seasons greetings to all. For years I have been trying to find out what happened to my GG-Grandfather John BISHOP. He disappeared ca 1830-1831. I have now found in Woolmer's Exeter and Plymouth Gazette of 19 Mar 1831 the Calendar for the Lent Assizes in Exeter which includes a John BISHOP age 27 (he was bap 10 Apr 1803 at Teigngrace) accused of burglary. I have also found the sentence/acquittal of 5 of the other 6 burglars on the list in the E&PG of 26 Mar 1831 but not John. I have found him in a prison hulk, with a life sentence, convicted at Exeter on 17 Mar 1831 of 'breaking into a house with tools'. I can't find him in any of the Australian Convict Indexes but of course not all the prisoners on hulks were transported. Before I do anything else I need to find where the crime took place so that I can judge if he is my John. A report in The North Devon Journal and General Advertiser of 31 Mar 1831 gives the sentence of the 6th burglar but not John. The article is 'concluded from our last' but despite trying many names of other prisoners in the Calendar I can't find the previous NDJ. Trove, the Australian newspaper site allows you to search for a specific paper by date but that does not seem possible on FMP. Any suggestions gratefully received. Best wishes from Diana in Perth WA DFHS 8119

Hi Mike, I am tracing the Luscombe/Pepperell families in the South Hams, most of my relatives come from Slapton. I have a Mitchelmore in my tree which I don't think is mentioned on your site. I have an Elizabeth MITCHELMORE born in 1804 The IGI gives her baptism as 10th June but after checking the parish record in the Totnes study centre I believe she was born on 10th and baptised on 29th June. According to the parish record her parents were John MITCHELMORE and Elizabeth. The IGI gives a marriage of John MITCHELMORE to Elizabeth PERRING on 20 July 1803. Elizabeth married Samuel Hyde PEPPERELL (my 4th great grand uncle) in Slapton on 27 February 1822 when she was only 17. If my research is right they had 9 children, all PEPPERELLS obviously. If you want any more info then please contact me and I'll see if I can check other details. I live close to Totnes and can check some South Hams parish records (held on microfiche) at the study centre.
