    1. [DEV] Shaldon and Sheldon
    2. Happy new year everyone, and I wish that all your brick walls will vanish this coming year. I would like to mention at this stage of the new year that Shaldon and Sheldon are two different places. I've had a few rather disgruntled people recently telling me that I haven't a clue to reading parish registers when in fact they have the wrong parish. I'm just the O.P.C. for Sheldon and not unfortunately Shaldon. I would ask researchers not to get the ache with me when it is discovered they have the wrong parish. It's certainly isn't my fault. Like wise when asked about R. D. Blackmore, author of Lorna Doone, no it is not possible to be descended from him directly, despite people's family stories. Though married he had no children. Incidentally I've not yet found any link from his family to mine. If anyone has a link from the Sheldon and surrounding areas of Devon to R.D.'s family I'd be more than interested. Terry Blackmore O.P.C. Sheldon, Devon.

    3. Hi Liz Unfortunately my original comment that Susanna POOK's maiden name was SOPER was not on the message you answered. 3. Hello Liz, It shows just how much one needs to check out verbal information. It was years ago that I was told that Shaldon had been known as West Teignmouth. At the time I thought it strange as the Teignmouth side of the river was where the ships were built. However as I have often spoken about the DUDER connection and the Newfoundland fishing being very important to the town, no one has corrected me until now. For many years I have been involved in local and family history groups Etc., and have given talks relating to this subject in and around Newton Abbot and Teignmouth. If you are correct I can only say, one lives and learns, even in old age! Regards, Dennis Bramble.

    3. Hi Mike That is interesting. Susanna SOPER is another one of my problem ancestors. She died 29 Mar 1845 age 77 so born 1767/8 but I know not where. Having had some success this week I am inspired to press on with more of my Devon families in the New Year. 3. Hi Diana: Both Soper and Pook are old Bovey Tracey names and Bovey is only five or six miles from Wolborough, Mike. -----Original Message----- From: devon-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Diana Stevens Sent: Monday, 30 December 2013 8:40 PM To: Joy Langdon; devon@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DEV] John BISHOP convicted at Exeter 1831 Hi Joy Yes I did read the Wolborough baptisms from at least 1803 when I visited the DRO in 1996 and I recorded William Soper POOK. Maria had a sister Mary bap 1798, I assume WSP is her child. Mary & Maria's mother's maiden name was SOPER. The PR is real mess, appallingly hard to read and I was new to research. These days I would also check for BTs in the hope they had been written neatly by the incumbent. Not all Devon BTs survive, I don't know about Wolborough. I have always assumed that John and Maria BISHOP were living in West Teignmouth for long enough (working in the parish for 1 year?) for him to gain Settlement there because that is what the examination in 1843 determined. But it seems that was not the case and it was Maria who moved there 1831-2. In 1841 my G-Grandfather Richard was an apprentice (mason) living in Wolborough with his grandmother Susanna POOK. I assumed he was apprenticed by the Overseers of the Poor but that would mean his father John had Settlement at Wolborough. Confusing! It is possible John & Maria had a child before Richard, there is enough time for more than one child between Richard & William and she could well have been pregnant when he was arrested. It is difficult from this distance as few PRs in that area have been transcribed/indexed. When I asked the DRO about buying PR fiche more than a year ago I was told I should wait for FMP to put the remainder of the Devon PRs on-line. I doubt if I am going to last the distance! John BISHOP was a carpenter, he may have worked in the timber yard so he knew where the tools were kept. At the beginning of 1830 John was still living in Wolborough where he married 28 Aug1825 (a sojourner) and had two sons Richard (bap 12 Mar 1826) & William (bap 30 Jan 1830). William was buried there 2 Feb 1830. It is not far from Kingskerswell. > > I had decided he was probably my John Bishop but I wanted the final proof.
