    3. Hi Bev When trying to find a location in the UK, our Ordnance Survey maps are invaluable. All the places shown on the 1:50,000 maps are indexed and you can search on this site: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ If you search for Liverton, you'll find 3 entries in Devon. One is a farm near Exmouth, but the other two are in the area that you're interested in. The links take you to the 1:50,000 OS map (zoom level 4), and if you zoom in another layer it takes you to the 1:25,000 map which is detailed enough to show field boundaries and in this case shows 'Old Leys Wood' but does not name the actual farm (unusual). There are buildings near the wood which look likely, so zoom in again and you'll see them marked as 'Old Leys Farm'. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=280558&Y=75394&A=Y&Z=106 Now that you have a location you can look at the Historical maps for the area on http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html Just copy the coordinates from the Streetmap webpage (280558,75394) and enter them on the Old Maps website, then select from the various available maps on the right hand side of the page - the 1:2,500 are the most detailed and make sure you zoom in to see the best detail. >From this you'll see that back in 1905 it was known as 'Old Lays' farm/wood so this may help with research. The other thing that I like to do (and you probably already know about) is to take a virtual stroll down the road using Google maps or Earth... http://tinyurl.com/p6gu7ma With best wishes Kate > -----Original Message----- > From: devon-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:devon-bounces@rootsweb.com] On > Behalf Of B. 2. B. Edmonds
    3. Dear All, In East Allington there is a John LANGMEAD buried what looks like the 2nd May 1638 who may be her husband. No Will mentioned for him though. I did not see a marriage but then the PR's are so hard to read in the years that I need to look. Katherine LANGMEAD had a son named Michael in 1627 Nicholas LANGMEAD had a daughter named Mary bapt 1634 Nicholas and Mary had a son Robert in 1636 They had a son in 1638 [can't quite make out the name could be Nichlas ] Their daughter Agnes was born in 1640 to Mr. Nicholas Langmead and Mary Writing is mostly dreadful. Regards Bev Happy new year to everyone, hope all your wishes and dreams come true. Good health to all and I hope that your family tree grows many more branches.

    3. It is possible that Dennis read what Peskett says about the ancient parish of Shaldon: SHALDON - pop 585 - Wonford hund - Archd'y of Exeter Includes Ringmore; alias names include St Nicholas Shaldon/Ringmore/Teignmouth, and Teignmouth St Nicholas. The modern church of St Peter (1902) has no separate registers. Distinguish Ringmore parish in Woodleigh Deanery. 1. Re: [DEV] Shaldon and Sheldon
    2. Sheldon is way up in them there Blackdown Hills, and it's one of the nicest little villages around. Not that you can see a lot of it like most Devon Villages, hedges everywhere. Very tiny with a nice church. Should you visit watch out for the narrow lanes in that area, the hedge rows brush both wing mirrors. Though it nothing to do with me at all. A nice place to stay in that area is Forest Glade Caravan site. I often used one of their permanent caravans. Nice people own it as well. If you use your own caravan make sure you follow the instructions on how to get there, unless you want your caravan with everything crammed in about a foot at the rear end, that hill on the wrong route is certainly very steep. I've driven up that a few times, best hope is you don't have to stop on it, it's a clutch burner. -----Original Message----- From: Jon Sent: Tuesday, December 31, 2013 11:38 PM To: devon@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DEV] Shaldon and Sheldon I love Shaldon, on the opposite side of the Teign to Teignmouth, a beautiful area, never been to Sheldon! She died 17 Dec 1952 and I would love to know where she is buried also. Her husband I believe is Sydney John VOOGHT born 1870 at East Ogwell, anyone have his birth date please? He died 21 Mar 1917 at Rattery, and assume he is buried there. They married Mar Q 1893 at East Stonehouse. I am no good with Google maps, they confuse me. 2. It doesn't actually say consecutively, though I think it means that. In 60 years of life the average time sleeping in bed is 197100 hours divide that by 24 = 8212.5 days divide that by 365 = 22.5 years. Since I'm over 60 I can better that. As she was 81 you can add on a few more years for the rest of her life. I trust she didn't suffer bed sores. I've tried a few of those when I was in hospital for a long time years ago wired up for a broken Femur. Ouch! Not nice to have.

    3. Bev, The will was *written* in Nov 1642, which was of course before March 10th 1642. The TNA copy shows Probate granted 1658 but if you read the probate statement you'll see why. I guess it would have 1st been granted soon after her death, but in Bishop's or Archdeacon's court, so that copy will have been lost in WW2. 2. Maybe I can at least equal it on one day. I was born Friday 24th March 1944. It appears to be a bit of a busy day. March 24th is the 365th and last day of the year in many European implementations of the Julian calendar. On the same day:- Ardeatine Caves massacre: German troops murder 335 Italian civilians in Rome. 24th March 1944, 76 Allied prisoners-of-war escaped from Stalag Luft III, a German POW camp that housed captured airmen. Their bold action was the basis for the film “The Great Escape” and was the largest mass escape of Allied prisoners during the Second World War. 24th March 1944 On this day, Maj. Gen. Orde Wingate, leader of the 77th Indian Brigade, also called the Chindits, dies in a transport plane crash. He was 41 years old. 811 British bombers attack Berlin. on the raid was 427 Squadron - Weather: Cloudy. Fair to fine later. Visibility moderate to good. The Squadron was called upon to provide fifteen aircraft this date, the target being BERLIN. This was like home week for the more experienced crews of the Squadron. Three aircraft failed to return from this operation, they were "J" JOHNNY piloted by CAN.R128270 W/O Yaworski, A.R., "K" KITTY piloted by CAN.R69918 F/S Dowdell, S.G. and "V" VIC piloted by W/0 Magdalinski W.F.. The remaining twelve aircraft successfully bombed the target and all returned to base except one aircraft that landed down south. -----Original Message----- From: B.
