    3. Hi Bev, The clue is in the name Union workhouse. .......and you will find that a number of parishes came under this union and the workhouse at Totnes was built to cope with the needy of these parishes in the Totnes union .( 28 parishes in the Totnes Union) So Henry Foale was chargeable to Cherston Ferrers , and Lee to Halwell and so on . This is the new system from 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act.. Each parish in the Union has a parish relief officer and it was his job to decide with the churchwardens and overseers of the poor , who could be kept in the parish on parish relief ( those who might be capable of some sort of paid work for the parish , laying out the dead, sitting with the dying , crow catching , scarecrowing etc.) and those who would have to be sent to the workhouse , mostly as you can see from this it was those young unmarried women who were pregnant, very old people and young women with 5 children under 5 who had mislaid their husbands and were simply too burdened with children to be able to do any work . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "B. 3. Hi Julie,   There is no Caroline Cross listed in the Branscombe parish register transcriptions.  However, on the 1841 census there is a John Cross aged 25 and Joseph Cross aged 3 in the same household as Caroline and her husband and I think I found John in the 1861 census with a birthplace of Branscombe.  He is possibly this baptism:   Branscombe 30 Jan 1814 John Cross son of Samuel and Martha, dairyman: http://www.branscombeproject.org.uk/bap.htm   I see that Charles and Caroline did name a daughter Martha Cross Willis so John may be a brother.   There is no Caroline Cross baptism in the Cullompton transcriptions on Genuki which go up to 1812. http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Cullompton/CullomptonBaptisms1798.html     Regards,   Joy ________________________________ From: julie roberts <dewie58@tadaust.org.au> To: devon@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, 2 January 2014, 4:02 Subject: [DEV] Caroline Cross from Exeter or Branscombe or Cullumpton Devon Happy new year to all. He appears to have followed his father in this trade, and his death certificate records that he died on 22 June 1942 at Bitterne Brewery. The cause of death was stated to be 'Due to War Operations'. I have never come across this before I cannot guess what a 55 year old licensed victualler would have been doing that would cause his death at what appears to be his home that could be attributed to 'war operations'. Service in the Home Guard comes to mind, but I would have expected the cause of death to be something more specific. Could he have been killed accidentally by a member of the armed services?
