    3. Hi, I am sure Brian would like this thread to end asap .......but I must take issue with Liz Loveland`s comment ... workhouses were expressly made as awful as possible because the administration believed that if they were terrible they would serve as a successful deterrent to most people This is so far from the facts but is the common belief thanks to Dickens . In fact as you work through the Board of Guardians minute book you will see that the "paupers" were provided with every necessity . They had a doctor , schoolteachers , food regularly of good if stodgy nature, and above all a roof over their heads and fires, a bed , clothes , shoes etc. The minute book details all of this So a workhouse child would probably be far better fed and educated and ready for work than his counterpart still scratching a living in the fieilds in the villages.. A 103 yrs old acquaintance of mine , a retired teacher, remembers the workhouse boys coming to school , each and every one of them clean and neatly turned out in good quality jacket trousers and boots. . . life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=/// ----- Original Message ----- From: "Liz Loveland" <lovelandfamilyhistory@gmail.com> To: <devon@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 05, 2014 5:26 PM Subject: Re: [DEV] WORKHOUSE > Hi all, > > Jon has already said a lot of the things that I would have added to this > discussion. 3. My Mary Ann JEFFERY was a cook at this school – ‘Educational Home’ in Torrington Place on the 1881 Census. I was wondering if there were any records/photos available of this establishment that may add to my family history, such as her length of employment etc. Mary Ann died at Plymouth in 1911. She was born in Ashprington 1836. I have not been able to trace her so far on 1871/1891/1901 census. She was transcribed as MATY A JEFFREY in 1861 being a servant for Stephen BRIGGS, Licensed Victualler in Plymouth in 1861. Any trace of Mary Ann, and also her brother John, (a shoemaker, like his father) b. 1833 would be really appreciated. Regards Hazel FORD Australia

    3. It is about Thomas COBLEY, in fact there were two of them Brian. One died 1794 at Puddicombe Park, Spreyton, but there is no trace of his grave. There was a dispute over his Will. The dispute reveals he was aged 99 and he was of an earlier generation of the same family as Thomas COBLEY of Buttsford Bev -------------------------------------------------- From: "Brian Randell" <brian.randell@newcastle.ac.uk> Sent: Sunday, January 05, 2014 9:02 PM To: <devon@rootsweb.com> Cc: ""devon"" <devon-L@rootsweb.com>; "Brian Randell" <brian.randell@newcastle.ac.uk> Subject: Re: [DEV] Thomas COBLEY [Will 1794] > Hi Bev: > > Could you be more specific please? > > Is the article about Thomas Cobley, or about the will? > > If the latter, and it contain a transcript of the will, can I have full > details of the article (page numbers, assuming it is not just one page > long, and author) please, for the Devon Wills Project. > > Cheers > > Brian > > Is the article about > On 5 Jan 2014, at 01:09, B.
