Would I be correct in thinking that it would only be the Church of Ireland that would have been allowed to administer wills prior to 1858, or would I need to investigate RC sources as well. I know that there was a marriage licence issued to Simon Cockeram and Mary Cosgrave by the diocese of Cloyne in 1814. I've not found the marriage itself in any of Church of Ireland Cloyne parishes as yet. I have a suspicion that Simon was C of E but that the Cosgraves were RC. I have however found one record that looks interesting at https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/68e5240076215 The Thomas Edwards who married Mary Cosgrave after Simon Cochrane's death was an engineer and they lived most of the 1820s and 1830s in Bristol. I wonder whether an engineer in the 1820s or 1830s is likely to be connected with the railways or whether those dates are too early. Regards Peter
Hello Bev, Thanks for the replies. I think these are post-1858 wills. I suspect that the coverage may be different between the Republic and Ulster sites, particularly for wills proved after partition. I see that there is a searchable list of wills through FMP and Ancestry - I suspect this is the 1484-1858 list referred to from http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/wills-testamentary-records/ - but I am not sure how comprehensive the list is, or whether the wills themselves still exist Regards Peter On 29 September 2016 at 04:30, B. Bev, The clue is in the web addresses, ".ie" is the Republic of Ireland and ".gov.uk" is Northern Ireland, part of the UK. While there have been a number of initiatives to provide single source records including Parish Records, the remaining Census and Griffiths, many government records are held in their respective archives. Some pre 1923 records(Army) are held in London. The archives do co-operate with common guidance leaflets and do try and give single access but there are different data protection rules in each country. Pre 1858 wills, like England, were probated in ecclesiastical courts based on bishoprics.. A number of sees cross the border. Derry, for example, includes a chunk of north-west Donegal. For Ireland, you need to know at least the county to know which database to use. Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: DEVON [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of B. Thanks Bev, I see that these are wills for 1858 onwards. My Devon related interest is in the Irish wife of Sargeant Simon Cockran of Silverton. After his death at Waterloo in 1815 it seems that she remained in England, living in Bristol in the 1820s with her second husband Thomas EDWARDS (an engineer) and then London. On the occasion of her third marriage, in 1849, she described her father as James Cosgrave, gentleman, deceased. So I am looking for an Irish gentleman named James COSGRAVE, probably a Roman Catholic, probably in County Cork in Ireland before 1849. Edna. The Board of Trade were responsible for regulating the merchant navy including certificates of competency. They were also responsible for accident investigation and regulations regarding seaworthiness. In theory their records are held at the National Archives (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ ) but many of the certificates, crew lists and other information ended up at the National Maritime Museum (http://www.rmg.co.uk/national-maritime-museum ). The Maritime History Archive in Newfoundland (https://www.mun.ca/mha/ ) also has some records. Some port records remain in local archives. The ones I have seen mostly relate to customs records. Comings and goings and cargoes were mostly reported in local newspapers. Like everything else not all records survive. Thank you Paul, I do have most of this but will contact, as you suggested, the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. The Richard Keates you mentioned was bapt. at Corfe Castle in 1793 and passed away in Wareham in 1868. Perhaps he was an Uncle as the name Richard seems to be passed on. There was a brother of RS Keates (1829- ) named Ebenezer who sailed around the world and eventually emigrated to Australia had a son there named also RS Keates. My Keates were connected to the Dorchester Independent Church and were, I think, non-conformist so their records might not be in with the Church of England records. Will let you know what I find. Thanks all for your kind help. With appreciation, Edna - sunny Ottawa
Edna The term master mariner usually meets a captain in the merchant navy. My first suggestion would be the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich http://www.rmg.co.uk/national-maritime-museum/caird-library I find their online catalogue a bit hit and miss. So I suggest e-mailing them. As well as his service record they hold records of deaths at sea and shipwrecks. I looked at FMP newspaper collection and found the following. "Sherborne Mercury March 3, 1863 the election of candidates till the two vacancies in the Foundation School, There was but one applicant, the son of Richard Keats, mariner, and he was duly elected.". The BDMs has First name(s) Richard Last name Keats Age 74 Birth year 1794 Death year 1868 Burial year 1868 Burial date 15 Jan 1868 Place Wareham, St Mary County Dorset Country England Source Family Search Record set Dorset Burials Category Birth, Marriage & Death (Parish Registers) Subcategory Deaths & burials Collections from United Kingdom First name(s) RICHARD Last name KEATS Gender Male Birth day - Birth month - Birth year - Age - Death quarter 3 Death year 1864 District WEYMOUTH County Dorset Volume 5A Page 197 Country England Record set England & Wales deaths 1837-2007 Category Birth, Marriage & Death (Parish Registers) Subcategory Deaths & burials Collections from United Kingdom I also noticed a Richard Squibb Keats was living in Australia. Perhaps a son. Did Richard snr die in Australia. Probate would still be required in the UK. FMP: First name(s) Richard Last name Keats Title Capt Departure port - Arrival year 1862 Arrival month Nov Arrival port - Ship name Bristolian State Victoria Record set Victoria inward passenger lists 1839-1923 Category Immigration & Travel Subcategory Passenger lists Collections from Australia & New Zealand First name(s) Richard Last name Keats Birth year 1829 Birth date 29 Aug 1829 Birth place Dorchester Birth county/country Dorsetshire Archive The National Archives Series BT113 Piece number 87 Date range 1845-1854 Record set Britain, merchant seamen, 1835-1857 Category Education & work Subcategory Merchant navy & maritime Collections from United Kingdom Image says he lived in Bristol when not at sea. Overseas deaths and deaths at sea should have been reported to the local consul who reported them back to the UK. There is an index but I can't remember where it is. I suspect that if he did not die at home his death would be recorded as Richard Keats and further investigation may require sight of (expensive) certificates. No , I can`t even find him in the National Archives, nor Britishnewspapersarchive nor any other source like the London Gazette etc. Lloyds lists , he must have been a mariner as it says in the 1861 census rather than a merchant seaman or a RN sailor . But his will seems to prove he was dead in Oct 1867 and the probate waits 2 years for this to be administered. Did you find Eliza Louisa in the 1871 as a widow ? -----Original Message----- From: liverpud Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2016 5:30 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [DEV] Richard Squibb Keats (1829--c1867....) His wife, Eliza Louisa née Worth (1835-1901) had a son Henry John Keats circa April 1867, therefore, the father RS Keats was around in mid-year 1866. Noticed that she was a Widow on the '71 Census living on Queen Sq. Bristol. -----Original Message----- From: liverpud Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2016 5:30 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [DEV] Richard Squibb Keats (1829--c1867....) Thank you Elizabeth, will go through these. Being a merchant sailor I was checking ports, ships and especially those that go "down". That Ebenezer is his brother and was quite the sailor too. What voyages they had. Will keep looking. I would like to connect with anyone who is researching any of the names HOCKIN, POUND & HEDDON around the Milton Damerel area in the 1800's & 1700's, especially in Thornbury, where my Hockin people were concentrated from the late 1700's or the first decade of the 1800's. I would even like to connect with people researching those names in the greater north Devon area, not just near Milton Damerel or Thornbury. My specific connection to this area and those names is via Sarah Grace Hockin, b. 1855 Thornbury, died 1926 in Ontario, Canada. She married John Toms (born near Lantaglos-by-Camelford, Cornwall) in 1878 in Mahamchurch, Cornwall.
Thanks so much for that Bev - so some did get found out! -----Original Message----- From: Beverley Edmonds Subject: [DEV] John ROWE and Charlotte AUSTEN Not my family, but an interesting article.
