Just in case any one has missed this annoucement. Births & Deaths - Extra Indexes and Temporary Price Cuts Major changes are about to affect our access to records of births and deaths in England & Wales. Indexes Until recently, the only way to consult indexes of birth and death registrations online and free of charge was by visiting the FreeBMD website. FreeBMD will continue to be useful to many researchers. However, for some searches, newly released indexes on the General Register Office (GRO) site will also be helpful. They cover these periods: · Births (July 1837-December 1915) · Deaths (July 1837-December 1957) Unlike all other indexes, the new GRO ones include these details for all years back to 1837: · Births = the mother's maiden name · Deaths = the age at death. The new GRO indexes are very cumbersome to use as you have to specify the year (plus or minus up to only 2 years) and also the gender of the person concerned. Temporary price cuts The GRO is now legally able to issue registration information other than as a certificate. As a pilot service, it intends to make information available in PDF form. Phase 1 of the new service starts on 9 November 2016 and will run for up to 3 weeks. It will test demand for uncertificated copies of the civil registration entries that are already digitised (i.e. birth entries recorded 1837 – 1934 and death entries recorded 1837 – 1957), in addition to those much more recent birth, death, marriage and civil partnership records which were also recorded directly onto the registration service online system. The application must be submitted online and contain a GRO reference. These PDFs will cost £6. This phase of the pilot will close after 3 weeks or when 45,000 PDFs have been ordered, whichever comes soonest. Further phases will follow and are described in detail on the GRO site. So, if you want details of such births and deaths, you can get them for £6.00, instead of £9.25 - but only for a very short time. In 1867 Parliament became concerned about the inconsistent and frequently inadequate standard of secondary education available to the fee-paying middle classes and commissioned a nation-wide inquiry into the status and performance of all such schools. The Schools Inquiry Commission (just Google it) published its report in many volumes, of which Volume XIV covers the counties of Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, and is online at https://archive.org/stream/cu31924032401162#page/n5/mode/2up The Devon section has detailed reviews of 23 boys schools and 2 girls schools, and tabulated data for many more. This is perhaps social history rather than genealogy but typically identifies headmasters and local governors. I looked for a person at Allhallows School in Honiton and read it was much improved after he ceased to be headmaster! Probably worth adding to the Schools section of GENUKI Devon. And if you really want social history, the Commission reported on girls' education, as reprinted at http://www.educationengland.org.uk/documents/sicr/sicr1-06.html Martin Beavis

Where I was coming from with the question is that I am aware that the role of the Roman Catholic church in England was very limited at least until the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829. Not allowed to conduct legal marriages etc etc, and presumably not allowed to officiate the proof of wills. The Roman Catholic church was obviously more widespread in Ireland, but was it any more tolorated by the authorities? > I would recommend getting a copy of > Tracing your Cork Ancestors published by Flyleaf Press. This was probably true for Ireland but I have > never had need to check . Where was the licence referenced? In the National Archives in Dublin there are a number of handwritten volumes, probably Victorian calandars of the type that you describe. The volumes are by diocese and record the name of the parties, Simon Cocheram and Mary Cosgrave and the year (1814). The volume has subsequently been digitized by FindMyPast and now forms part of their "Ireland Diocesan and Prerogative Marriage Licence Bonds indexes 1623-1866" collection. I was advised by the genealogist that the Irish National Archives employ to offer advice that the licence bond allegation papers no longer existed, but that the licence would have been issued by the Church of Ireland. The Irish National Archives have some Church of Ireland records on microfilm but I think I am close to exhausting what they have filmed for Cloyne Diocese but without finding the marriage that I am seeking. > Beware of the term engineer. Peter, Wills were one of the churches secular functions.. Ireland is a bit like Devon relying on Victorian calendars and indices. Most of these have been published in one form or another. I would recommend getting a copy of Tracing your Cork Ancestors published by Flyleaf Press. The book has a fairly comprehensive list of what records have survived , including parish records. In England/Wales marriage licences stated the church where the marriage was authorised to take place.. This was probably true for Ireland but I have never had need to check . Where was the licence referenced? Beware of the term engineer. It referred to anyone who worked with engines. At this time it was more likely to refer to the operator of a mine pump. A dirty and dangerous job. The Stockton and Darlington Railway opened in 1825, the Liverpool, Manchester (Rocket) was 1830 and Irelands 1834. Would I be correct in thinking that it would only be the Church of Ireland that would have been allowed to administer wills prior to 1858, or would I need to investigate RC sources as well. I know that there was a marriage licence issued to Simon Cockeram and Mary Cosgrave by the diocese of Cloyne in 1814. I've not found the marriage itself in any of Church of Ireland Cloyne parishes as yet. I have a suspicion that Simon was C of E but that the Cosgraves were RC. I have however found one record that looks interesting at https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/68e5240076215 The Thomas Edwards who married Mary Cosgrave after Simon Cochrane's death was an engineer and they lived most of the 1820s and 1830s in Bristol. I wonder whether an engineer in the 1820s or 1830s is likely to be connected with the railways or whether those dates are too early.
