    3. Hi Peter ,   Mr Murch , station master is a clear memory from going on the train to school , so this would be the 1950s    He was a very well respected man and lived, in these glory days, in the station master`s house attached to the station !!!   As a child I would not have known his Christian name !!! I don`t think many people would have such was his status !!    I noticed him also because he was the only Murch we knew .  Salterton was a town which had increased in size over the previous 100yrs and the old local names were being smothered by new names .   And its a name I have never heard since . Sometimes you can attribute a name to an area,, sometimes to a county , but in this case he and the Cowds and the Teeds were almost exclusively Salterton families . 3. Hello Elizabeth, I'll reply directly from my 'normal' address. I don't have many MURCH males in Devon outside the Totnes/Brixham area and at present nothing from the area around Budleigh Salterton. Do you know roughly when this man was station master? As I noted, I have MURCH families from sons George, John and William. George MURCH was an excise man and his children were born in Isle of Wight, Dorset and their last daughter at Chumleigh in Devon. I've seen that excise men were moved around to prevent getting too close to 'customers'. George and family were in Manchester by the 1841 census and all seemed to have married/had families there. Hs only son James married Eliza REEVE in Manchester and they did return to Devon where children were born at Kingsbridge - James' sons John Benjamin Reeve MURCH, James and Thomas Moore MUCH all had children in London/Kent area; George's second son George MURCH's children were all born in Manchester/Prestwich and his family emigrated to NZ in 1881; and George's 3rd son James was a mariner and drowned off Indonesia, also in 1881. As far as I can ascertain, he doesn't seem to have married My John and brother William both had bankruptcy notices published in the same issue of the a newspaper in 1816. I as yet have no knowledge of what precipitated this but, as both were said to be carpenters/builders at various times, my suspicions are that some building venture went bad. Both moved to London at some point – William between daughter Caroline’s birth in Devon c 1821 and son George born at Chiswick in 1825; John between his daughter Mary Grace’s baptism in Totnes in 1826 and daughter Sarah Janes’ birth in Chelsea in 1829. My gg-grandfather was Samuel Vittery MUCT b 1831 in London and emigrated to NZ with his family in 1857. James MURCH and Jane HARVEY had one other son - James (a very popular name in the MURCH family as I currently have 12! - baptised at Totnes on 31 October 1781 but no further details on him. I'll also reply via the Devon list but it may have already have closed. Eliza survived until she was 101.  Her father was Hermon GITSHAM born 26 Nov 1825 at Broadclyst. Son of George GITSHAM b.23 Aug 1789 at Farringdon and son of John and Eleanor.  Do you have a connection to this family? I am not on the new list at the moment as I don't have time.
