In a message dated 5/21/2008 12:25:04 PM Eastern Daylight Time, genealogy@babbalu.com writes: He belonged to the 1st artillery which had 1 Geschützführer (gunner), 1 Oberkanonier (head cannoneer), 2 Fahrkanoniere (transportation cannoneers) and 9 Bedienungskanoniere (service cannoneers). One of the transportation cannoneers was Bernhard Mareis in June 1849. The 1st artillery made an expedition to Lahr on June, 26. Because of this expedition there was an inquiry against Bernhard Mareis after the revolution. The council of Offenburg wrote that Bernhard Mareis has no property. And the council refered to a same attestation about Anton Geck who was the gunner: he was a calm, harmless citizen, with not much politics behind his back. His conduct is blameless. There are no sanctions known against Bernhard Mareis. - Wendelin Hi Wendelin: Thanks for the translation. Any suggestions on how find out The parents names Bernhard Mareis or if he died & when in Offeburg. In The United States , it would ussually be mentioned on The Census records which could even be found Online through The Ancestry.com Site. Or by going to The Municipal Archives & looking at the Marriage or death certifcates which often list parents names. Is there a similar Online Site for Germany records. Perhaps I could Look up something in New York City in exchange for somebody who might be able to look up these items in your local Offenburg archives or where this information is kept. Unfortunately The Mormon Visitors Center in Here in Manhattan where I used to do family research on microfilms for revital records in other states & countrys is closed for now & I would have to travel far away to use them in another state.
