Hi Howard, not a word-to-word translation but I included some information: Bernhard Mareis was a member of the Bürgerartilleriekorps (artillery corps of the Offenburg militia) of the town Offenburg. The member of this corps were volunteers. He belonged to the 1st artillery which had 1 Geschützführer (gunner), 1 Oberkanonier (head cannoneer), 2 Fahrkanoniere (transportation cannoneers) and 9 Bedienungskanoniere (service cannoneers). One of the transportation cannoneers was Bernhard Mareis in June 1849. The 1st artillery made an expedition to Lahr on June, 26. Because of this expedition there was an inquiry against Bernhard Mareis after the revolution. The council of Offenburg wrote that Bernhard Mareis has no property. And the council refered to a same attestation about Anton Geck who was the gunner: he was a calm, harmless citizen, with not much politics behind his back. His conduct is blameless. There are no sanctions known against Bernhard Mareis. - Wendelin
