    3. Hello: A possible source for familyresearch are the old documents in the archive. Prior there were many cloisters which had large landed property. One of those was the former cloister Wittichen. A compilation is available for a book (written 1745/51) which contains copies of documents 14th - 18th century. The towns are: A Gengenbach and Strohbach B Bermersbach and Wingerbach C Reichenbach and Ohlsbach D Ortenberg E Offenburg F Griesheim G Waltersweier H Hofweier I Niederschopfheim K Zunsweier L Harmersbach M Welschensteinach N Haslach I made scans of the index of names: http://ortenau.50free.org/wittichen/ One example: Ockhenfieß Jeckhlin 1335 E/1; means Offenburg in 1335. If you need information to a special name and the entry please let me know. Die beglaubigten Abschriften der Briefe der Schaffnei Gengenbach 14.-18. Jh. 3. I recommend: Hans Christian Erik Midelfort, Witch Hunting in Southwestern Germany 1562-1684 - The Social and Intellectual Foundations, Stanford 1972. Some examples for accusations in Appenweier, Urloffen, Zimmern: Hans Marggraf accused Catharina (wife of Erhardt Wolf) she is responsible for his impotence. She was also responsible for bad weather. Dietrich Kayser and Christmann Geltreich accused Appolonia Miller she is responsible for the death of cattle. Jacob Sauer accused his stepmother Susanne Hain she is responsible for his (and others did the same: Hans Hölzle, Philipp Remp) impotence. Priest Stahel told she was also responsible for the death of her stepson Mathern Sauer. Priest Synoth (Symoth) accused Barthel Pfeiffer and his wife Brigitha (she was midwife), Brigitha is responsible of stillborn children. Priest Melchior accused Margarete Sauer (wife of Hans Sauer) she is responsible for the death of his cook and the cook's stillborn child. She was accused by others she is responsible for fog. Jail of "Landvogtei Ortenau" was castle Ortenberg. Place of execution was near Ortenberg or in the hometown. Public prosecutor were the secretary of the Landvogtei, the administrator ("Schaffner"), the overseer of the Gericht Zunsweier and others. The members of the court came from different towns of the Landvogtei. There was also a intercessor. There are 2 theories why the witch hunting ended in Offenburg (and therefore maybe also in the Landvogtei) in 1630: - The Swedes didn't allow witch hunting. - One woman was able to endure a special torture (an iron seat) without confession. The Landvogtei was only a small part of the nowadays Ortenau. The other dominations had own courts, jails, place of executions. Wendelin

    3. Thank you for the lists, Wendelin! Do you know how this "witchcraft" problem started? Here in the Colonies, it was because they ate moldy rye and other cereals and grasses, hence ergot, and were actually poisoned. It made them have convulsions, and it can cause gangrene. At least, this is my understanding. Do you know why they took it to be an omen of sorts? What made them look at the effect instead of look for the cause? Just wondering, Jeanne

    3. Hmm .... so men were also accused of witchcraft! Interesting. Many thanks for these lists, Wendelin. Does your information say what was considered witchcraft? Like, was breaking the law considered witchcraft, or was it something more bizarre? Fortunately, my Barbara Widemer was born in 1681, and my Sauer ancestors managed to stay off this list - but it's creepy to think of humans being burned at the stake! 3. How common were these "witchcraft accusations"? Since it happened in Appenweier as well with Sauer women, I'm wondering if it took place all over Germany during that period of time. Someone I know with ancestors down around Furtwangen said one female ancestor was burned at the stake for having cows that produced "too rich" milk. Was this practice limited to women? If so, I wonder why - and why none of the males were able to stop it as it seemed to cover a 70-80 year period. Or were women just considered inferior beings back then? 3. Hello Nick, books about the history of towns contains sometimes such information. I believe there are at least 3 of such history books for Hornberg. But it's always possible that nobody cared until now for this topic and the documents are waiting in the archive for a researcher. Perhaps it was not so bad in Hornberg (because it belonged to Württemberg) like Offenburg and Harmersbach valley (with some dozens of victims). Wendelin ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nick M. 3. Actually Carol I found it most interesting and was glad you sent it, I found some of my ancestors, although the spelling was not always accurate..I sent it on to other researchers and they were having a great time trying to figure out different spelling to search under. Anything free is always welcome to me. Thanks for sending us the link. Linda

    3. I'll too slow. That maintenance time was about two hours as Rootsweb states the "maintenance has been done"....The List Archives are up and running. Gee, this time the repair was fast as per < http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ > djweber [email protected]

    3. Rootsweb has identified that their "lists5" server is down indefinitely for maintenance. For now it appears that the only effect this down action may have for us would our inability to access any List Archive. djweber [email protected]

    3. Yes, DJ, I'm reading your comments and I have to admit that I've seen a number of the southern Missouri German immigrants who had departed from LaHavre. Namely the ones I've found were from Bohlsbach and Appenweier, but I'm sure many others were from all over Ortenau. But my great, great grandfather from Windschlaeg left from Antwerp. I have yet to find ship records for my other German ancestors. About that information I sent in, I had not tested it prior to sending it as I already have access to immigration records. But since it was sent to me from another List, and sounded free, I figured why not pass it on. Sorry if it proved a disappointment. My experience on searching immigration records is that it depends on who was transcribing the records. I've seen a Petranella become a Nellie and a J. become a T., depending on which site I searched. Then when I search by soundex, I'll get flooded with the most unbelievably crazy spellings. Carol -----Original Message----- From: djweber [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, October 28, 2004 8:01 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Ortenau] A (very) limited "survey" on Ports of Embarkatioin After Carol Rogers forwarded to the List the information that the OliveTree web site had access to the Ancestry New York City Passenger Lists arrivals for the period 1851-1891, I tried a limited test for a number of different surnames which I had remembered from my attempts to read Church Registers of towns within the Ortenau using the surname and the keyword of Baden in the search. The "winning" port of embarkation hands down was LeHavre. I expected a high percentage of emigrants to have departed from LeHavre because LeHavre was a major port of commerce from Europe to the United States before and after the American War of the Rebellion but the number per page from that web site for Baden emigrants was surprising. For some of the pages of those emigrants no other port was identified. I did not do an actual count as my test was very limited but the expected Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Antwerp and Bremen listings were in a certain minority. Of course, for many of the earlier years within this time period Hamburg was not as yet an important seaport. The suggestion from this limited survey could be that our ancestors may have emigrated through the Port of LeHavre.....but my own ancestors from Baden may cancel any value to the thought that LeHavre was most usual port. My ancestors left through Rotterdam but not they nor any of the additional emigrants from the same Manifest are listed in that 1851-1891 New York database. It can mean that if the emigrant left the Ortenau, think LeHavre, at least, if the arrival location was New York City. And, it can mean NOTHING. djweber [email protected] ==== DEU-BAD-ORTENAU Mailing List ==== A list of Historic and Current towns of the Ortenau can be found at < http://ortenau-history.de.vu >. ============================== Search Family and Local Histories for stories about your family and the areas they lived.
