    3. The Encyclopedia Britannica in its daily message for January 18 offers the reminder that on January 18, 1871, the German Empire was formed through an "agreement of the leaders of the states in the North German Confederation with the hereditary rulers of Bavaria, BADEN, Hesse and Württemberg". djweber [email protected]

    1. Determining and Understanding Unique Names
    2. djweber
    3. From prior messages, you know that various URLs are being added to the Links section of your companion Search page, < http://ortenau.speedyspace.de/search/ >. We hope each of these URLs may be of some value to you in your ancestral search. Several of these web sites have offered spellings of German first names as, in many cases, we have found children with unique-to-us names. In surfing for additional pages for you, I refound Kate Monk's Onomastikon (Dictionary of Names). These pages have been on-line and off-line a number of times since they were first put on-line in 1997. I feared that they had been removed, never to return to the Internet but a new web site which strongly stresses the copyright information has reestablished them on-line. The home page address is < http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/ > and the top German page is < http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/Europe-Western/Germany/index.htm >. These pages are not only for German names as they cover most every area of the world and might help you for children's names of any nationality. I hope that this time the pages will remain on-line and I would like to suggest that you read through them, gather information and perhaps copy potentially vital pages for your later personal use. The main web address will be added to the Links section of your Search page; hopefully, the Onomastikon may stay on-line this time but considering its past history I do suggest fast action in using the pages. djweber [email protected]

    1. Links and the Search page
    2. djweber
    3. As Wendelin has mentioned to the List, I have been trying to add Links for web pages which may have some potential interest for you in your ancestral search within the Ortenau area. At present, there are more than fifty links listed at < http://ortenau.speedyspace.de/search/ >. I have an additional link which really does not fit into the Ortenau search but it pertains to the work of some German emigrants after their arrival in the United States. I have not listed this site at the Search location but there is various information about the times after the 1848 revolution, about the German attitudes and life in the United States and the site is interesting reading. Perhaps the only exact connection is one individual who emigrated from Achern to Milwaukee. It is a site which identifies a portion of the history of the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co. with a web address of < http://www.chiptin.com/schlitz/history.htm >. If you have an interest in stories of the German emigrant, part of this web site should be a reading which you would enjoy. djweber [email protected]

    3. Wendelin, This question came up before, but I'm not too sure if I'm understanding you correctly. For the marriages in Niederschopfheim, you have listed dates. The first four numbers refer to the year, but are the second three numbers referring to the month and day? And if so, are they reversed from what is common in the U.S.? Example: 1707 126 Schaub Joh. Georg cum Meyer Elisabeth Would this mean?: Year: 1707 Day: 12 Month: 6 (June) Also, where did these dates come from? Civil or church records? Thanks again for helping out with this! Carol

    3. John, You might try this: Go to < http://ortenau.speedyspace.de/search/ >, click at the top bar on the word "Sources", scroll down ... to "Andere Quellen (other sources)" section. This explanation was sent in by "djweber" awhile back as a few of us were wondering the same thing! 3. A further thought on this thread. If you have looked at the "Sources" section of < http://ortenau.speedyspace.de/search/ >, you know that the current list of available linked information includes a number of titles and it is growing almost weekly. If you haven't looked at the page, perhaps the current title listings below might suggest information for your Baden hometown at that "Sources" link. djweber [email protected] ---------------------------- Ortssippenbücher (Kinship Books) Index Altenheim Dundenheim Ichenheim (partial Index) Kippenheimweiler Müllen Schutterzell ------------------------------------- Auswanderer (emigrants) Aus den Memoiren einer alten Offenburgerin Diersburg Hofweier Niederschopfheim Nordrach Prinzbach und Schönberg Schutterwald --------------------------------------- Andere Quellen (other sources) Ortsarchive (Town archives) Teilnehmer an Napoleons Feldzug 1812 (soldiers for Napoleon) Achern - Kirchensteuerliste (churchrate list) 1666 Durbach - Familiennamen (surnames) Gamshurst - Geschichte der Pfarrei Hornberg - Bauernhöfe (farms) 1471-1590 Hugsweier - Bürger (citizen) 1793 Nußbach - Kirchenbuch (parish record) 1645 Zunftmitglieder (member of guilds) in Offenburg 1705-1714 Renchen - Familiennamen (surnames) Steinach - Familiennamen (surnames) Bürgerverzeichnis des ehemaligen Amtes Willstätt 1590 Hausinschriften im Hanauerland (house inscriptions in Hanauer country) Windschläg - Familiennamen (surnames) Dokumente von Kloster Wittichen (documents of cloister Wittichen Bürgerverzeichnis von Zell a. 1. Holidays
    2. Wendelin Irslinger
    3. Till the 2nd half of the 18th century Catholics had many holidays (56 or 57 in the diocese Konstanz). Emperor Maria Theresia persuaded pope Benedikt XIV to release 18 former holidays: Osterdienstag, Pfingstdienstag, Matthias, Georg, Philippus und Jakobus, Magdalena, Apostel Jakobus, Laurentius, Bartholomäus, Matthäus, Michael, Simon und Judas, Martin, Katharina, Andreas, Nikolaus, Thomas, Fest der Unschuldigen Kinder in 1753 which was realized in the diocese Konstanz in 1766 (don't know when this was realized in the diocese Strasbourg). 20 additional holidays were released in 1771 so the Catholics in the diocese Konstanz had the following holidays: Oster- und Pfingstmontag, Weihnachten, Neujahr, Dreikönig, Christi Himmelfahrt, Fronleichnam, die Marienfeste Lichtmeß, Verkündigung, Himmelfahrt, Geburt und Empfängnis und an Heiligenfesten Petrus und Paulus, Allerheiligen, der Stephanstag und der Tag eines frei zu wählenden Heiligen. In der Diözese Konstanz war dies der Tag des Bistumpatrons Konrad, dazu kam noch der Josephstag.
