    3. Saturday, my wife and I watched as much of the Tour de France through Baden as we could on Irish TV and saw the bicycles going through Kippenheim, Altdorf and Ringsheim. My great grandfather was born in Mahlberg, only 1/2 mile from the road which the race took south. The day before, Friday, the race went through Karlsruhe. The coverage was wonderful with views from helicopters and motorcycles driving along the same route. I believe the bicycles crossed back into France over a bridge near Sasbach on their way to their day's destination in France, Gerardmer.

    1. Not a Companion Page
    2. djweber
    3. There is a map at < http://www.genealogienetz.de/reg/BAD-WUE/Landkarten/bad1771g.gif >; this is NOT a Companion page to the Ortenau List but with the identification by colors of the patch work ownership of the areas which became the Grand Duchy of Baden, it is a valuable tool of knowledge for we searchers in the Ortenau. The map shows the Habsburg lands and the Hessian Hanau-Lichtenberg to the north in the OrtenauKreis. It identifies the area of the Bistum Straßburg, Reichsstädte towns and other bits and pieces of ownership including Herrschaft(s) to the south. This map is one of several excellent pre-Napoleonic maps of the Baden area available on-line. If you have never looked at it, put the URL in your browser and look it over. Perhaps, you might want to print it or send yourself a copy of the map for your personal genealogical records. It might even be an aid when trying to figure out if an ancestor married or moved only in his "homeland" or outside his birth land. djweber [email protected]

    1. Again, but with Changes for the Ortenau Companion Pages' URLS
    2. djweber
    3. You have seen this before.....well most of you have. But there have been a number of new members recently and hopefully, I have not bored them, as yet, with this continuing information. Once a month I should send you reminders of the information available within the companion pages for this Ortenau List. I know I have been remiss in doing this but I have memories of another Rootsweb List where such messages of "instructions" come with such regularity and force that they can become annoying to some readers. However, I have been reminded so I will take my chance on being hopefully not too annoying to you. And, this time, I have an additional excuse. The URLs for the Companion Pages have changed. ******************************** < http://ortenau.speedyspace.de/ > has been replaced by < http://ortenau.genealogy-bw.de/ >. < http://ortenau.speedyspace.de/search/ > has been replaced by < http://ortenau.genealogy-bw.de/search/ >. ******************************** Remember < http://ortenau.genealogy-bw.de/ > and < http://ortenau.genealogy-bw.de/search/ >. Make yourself a note of the new addresses. Search these sites so that the addresses will be in the history of your browser and easy for you to return to the sites --------------- The prime companion page is at < http://ortenau.genealogy-bw.de/ >. This address gives you a short description in German and in English of the Ortenau. A search availability at this site allows us to search a name or a word within the many individual Ortenau town pages. There are links to articles on each of the towns within the Ortenau including details on the town history, the areas of the historic Ortenau, the various wars which ravaged the area as well as links to the Rootsweb location for the Ortenau List which would allow searching and browsing into past messages, to a map which identifies the area of each of the towns of the Ortenau and to a list of books available at the Landesbibliographie Baden-Württemberg which offer information on towns and areas of the Ortenau. Agreed we who read English may feel stymied but the Town pages, although in German, are in fairly simple German and most of those details can be figured out and understood. --------------- Perhaps the more important companion page for you is at < http://ortenau.genealogy-bw.de/search/ > where there are links to the same list of Ortenau towns but these town links allow us to search each town for other researchers involved in family from that town and we are then allowed to place our own specific interests at the town. Further links will take us to a Yahoo! site where our List members have uploaded pictures which pertain to the Ortenau, to a number of Source listings of surnames and specific individuals found in old records, to pages offered by our List members and to a page of additional web sites which offer various details about Baden, the Ortenau and the towns of the Ortenau. If you have used the previous pages, check out the new pages to see if there are any new listings which may be of value to you. If you have never used the previous pages, all the better to get involved, do your searching on both pages, get your history lesson (in German) on your Ortenau town of interest and make your entries in the Search section. And then place your specific question where you need help.....directly into the Ortenau List. We have a number of knowledgeable Ortenau researchers within our List membership and aid to you is available from a List inquiry. Again, the new pages are: < http://ortenau.genealogy-bw.de/ > and < http://ortenau.genealogy-bw.de/search/ >. djweber [email protected]

    1. See the Tour de France in ORTENAU
    2. Just checking up on Le Tour de France. For those of you who don't know, it's a really big bicycle race that takes place every July in France. :-) On Saturday, the Tour visits Germany and includes a ride through Bohlsbach among other villages in Baden. Perhaps the bicyclists will race down Okenstrasse?? For more information, check out this link to Saturday's stage of the Tour: _http://www.letour.com/2005/TDF/LIVE/us/800/horaire.html_ (http://www.letour.com/2005/TDF/LIVE/us/800/horaire.html) and watch OLN (Outdoor Life Network) on cable to catch the race. 3. Hallo again, today, I would like to ask the following: 1) I have ancestors in Ober- and Unterentersbach. Who knows where to look for data (parish records, 17.-19.th century)? 2) I found out that data for Biberach pre-dating 1715 can be found in the parish records of Zell/Harmersbach. These records go back to 1654. Does anybody know whether Zell was part of another parish before that? 3) Who can tell me where Neuhausen is situated? I suppose not far from Zell/Harmersbach 4) Is there a "Hochstetten" next to Biberach or just a "Hoffstetten" in that area? 5) Who knows a village called Ingersbach? Thanks a lot for today and best wishes Kurt.

    2. djweber
    3. It is two years in the future, at best, and it may be nothing of value for one whose ancestor emigrated from the Baden area but the town of Hamburg is building a Museum, "BallinStadt", a museum which "is to recreate, on a smaller scale, the stories behind the largest period of German emigration to America between 1850 and 1954". Early information on the museum can be found at < http://www.germany-info.org/relaunch/culture/new/cul_ballinstadt_1_2005.html > in case you would care to know the plans for this future historical museum. djweber [email protected]

    1. Bruch, Ingersbach records
    2. Prof. Dr. Kurt Erlemann
    3. Dear fellow genealogists, I am a bit puzzled concerning some names and places in the Ortenau. Many of my ancestors lived in the Kinzigtal, around Biberach. Presumably, entries pre-dating 1725, are listed in the Gengenbach parish records (cath.). But some of the names I found in Biberach I can´t trace back in Gengenbach, for instance: Damm, Gisler, Sohler, Fix, Zapf, Braunstein. Possibly, this has to do with places like Bruch (where the Gislers came from) or Ingersbach (where Braunstein originated from). Does anybody have an idea where to search these names and places instead of the cath. parish records of Gengenbach? Or is anyone able to tell me where to find these places? Thanks a lot, have a nice weekend Kurt (Erlemann) Wuppertal

I answered the email and suggested that he, or she, join the Baden Mailing List as they are just GREAT in helping. Wouldn't everyone agree???? There is somewhat a language barrier as he doesn't speak English well. By for now - Maurine
