Appointment of Lighthouse Keepers would have been a matter of political patronage; you may be able to locate some record of appointments through the Library of Congress site too. Since one of my distant cousins was one of the Assistant Lighthouse Keepers at Jupiter Inlet Light in Florida, I had the happy experience of finding the following site: http://www.lighthousefriends.com which has a lot of information and you will be able to make contact with a lot of lighthouse fans there who might be able to provide more specific leads on how to find more information. There is also a rootsweb message board on 'occupatons' under 'topics', and you could get some response by posting there as well, concerning 'lighthouse keepers'.
