Author: frostfreedet Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.delaware.counties.sussex/3207.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Joni You might be able to find reference to establishment of this lighthouse in records of Congress, such as indexes to old sessions, hearings and bills on the Library of Congress 'American Memory' web site. Appointment of Lighthouse Keepers would have been a matter of political patronage; you may be able to locate some record of appointments through the Library of Congress site too. Since one of my distant cousins was one of the Assistant Lighthouse Keepers at Jupiter Inlet Light in Florida, I had the happy experience of finding the following site: http://www.lighthousefriends.com which has a lot of information and you will be able to make contact with a lot of lighthouse fans there who might be able to provide more specific leads on how to find more information. There is also a rootsweb message board on 'occupatons' under 'topics', and you could get some response by posting there as well, concerning 'lighthouse keepers'. Robert married Elizabeth Jarvis in 1854. Do you have any info on her parents? I have been unable to find her in the 1850 census. Robert L. is also buried at St Johnstown too, I also have a picture of his headstone. Do you have any info for Roberts father Levin? My John Smith and family, including son Levin, were on the 1860 Federal Census in Baltimore Hundred, Millsboro. They were both listed as Lighthouse Keepers. I have been advised that a John Smith was the first lighthouse keeper on Fenwick Island from 1859 to 1861. I believe this may be the above family. Would there be a closer lighthouse that was running in 1860? to Millsboro, or could someone shed light on census records for lighthouse keepers and their families. Thank you. 3. Hi Harold, I found an Irvin M. Tindall, age 3 and some months (difficult to read) on the 1930 census on Willow Street, in Laurel, Sussex County, Delaware. He was living with his grandparents, William J. and Edith E. Boyce. William J. Boyce was a truck driver, it looks like it says a "Fert., Truck." There was also an Irvin Tindall, age 3 and some months (also difficult to read), son of Marshall Tindall and his wife, whose name I can't read, and their daughter Edith, age 11/12 years. They rented a home on 4th Street in Brandywine, New Castle County, Delaware.Marshall Tindall was a house painter. Both families were from Delaware, parents or grandparents as well as the two boys names Irvin. I'm not sure if this is any help at all but it might narrow down where exactly he was from.
