Author: PatJohnson1985 Surnames: Clifton, Smith Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.delaware.counties.sussex/3210/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone on the board have access to Will Book A99 Liber E pages 191-192? It is the will of Obediah Smith probated 15 March 1796. the transcript of the will says "grandsons Job, Benjamin, Charles, John, Judah, and Smith Clifton" -- But does it actually say grandsons? Or does it say "children" of daughter Margaret Clifton? My ancestress is Judah Clifton born in Delaware and I believe she is the child mentioned in this will but without finding what the actual wording is, there is doubt. The name Judah Clifton is unusual enough that I believe it must be her, but need to know for sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. No I don't think there is a documented marriage record. Kent and Sussex did not keep County marriage records in the 1700s that I know of. The mis-named compilation by Wright on records of Kent and Sussex Co.'s to 1800 has almost nothing from Kent Co. Their family has been so embroidered by descendants' lore, I believe nothing I read about them except a land or tax record, or the rare marriage or death record that gives them as parents. Phyllis Vines told me once that she thought Caleb's land straddled the Kent-SX boundary near Milford. I do not have land records to support that. Unfortunately there is a gap in the DE land records that have been abstracted. Missing are deeds from record books P-W. Family Tree Bookshop has the annoying habit of giving dates rather than volume identification to their abstracts, so it looks like there is continuity. But the gap in abstracts is also the time period in which Caleb would have sold SXDE land before moving to Monongalia Co. One problem with finding out which William Burroughs bought the land is the Burroughs family in Sussex seems to have avoided wills and the Sussex Orphan's court is full of dealings with their lands -- the second problem is the Burroughs seem to have as many Williams, Johns, Boazs, and Benjamins as the Willeys have Williams, Johns and Absaloms. That being a given I have a tendency to agree with you that William may be the son of John -- according to John and Elijah's estates William did not live in the Monongalia or Red Stone area at the time of Elijah's death and it appears he was in De. There are several connections between Burroughs and Willeys including the fact that land belonging to both Levin Willey and William Willey bordered on the land of Warren Burroughs and Warren Burroughs was married to Priscilla Polk Willey, the widow of John Willey of Somerset [ his land was probably in that gray area of Sussex claimed by both Md. and De. before 1759] A slight change of subject but still dealing with Willeys and Sussex -- do you have the date and place of the marriage of Caleb Davis and Leah Basnett ? Tax lists can be useful when the assessor makes notes to try to distinguish who owed for what. There may be notations such as 'Absalom son of John', 'Margaret wid.', 'William (minor)'. Residence may be given if in a different Hundred than the land or chattels to be taxed. I have not found a specific 'connection' between my SXDE emigrants and any Willeys. I don't doubt that they all crossed paths and knew each other to some degree. It is possible that the land owned briefly by a William Willey (purchased from one of the heirs of Nehemiah Tilney in 1769), sold by William Willey and Ann his wife to William Burroughs, was adjacent land of William Poynter who d. in 1781. I think but have not proved that the purchaser, Wm. Burroughs, was of Kent Co., DE and was one of the sons of the John Burroughs who moved to West's Run, east of what became Morgantown, about 1769/1770 and died there by the early 1790s; that William Burroughs is mentioned as deceased during the proceedings on the estate of John's son Elijah ca. 1796-1804 in Monongalia County WV. But William Burroughs' ownership of that parcel in SXDE doesn't appear to be connected with that William Willey in any way other than the purchase agreement in SXDE Deeds K:347. I have had a moderate ! interest in relationships among the DE emigrants to Monongalia Co., WV, but no more interest than that in the Burroughs'. 3. Hi! My 3xgreat-grandparents were Daniel Hearn,Sr. born 1770 in I believe Sussex Co.,DE. and Elizabeth "Betsy" Wilson. They moved from DE. to Washington Co.,OH. before 1810. His parents were Nathanial Hearn & Jain Calloway. I know nothing about Betsy or her family except she was a student of teacher Daniel Hearn. They had 15 children. Daniel probably had a first wife as the older children couldn't be Betsy's. Thanks for any help! Pam Drake in IN. padrake@sbcglobal.net

Calling someone 'Sr.' or 'Jr.' does not explain anything, since those designations can indicate relative age of contemporaries rather than father-son relationships. There were many persons name Absalom and William Willey. 'Father of my grandfather' might place the older man as born in the mid-19th century, whereas these names go back to the early 18th century -- if not earlier.
