    1. [DESUSSEX] Joanna E. Smith, daughter of Alexander & Martha (Wharton) Smith
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Smith, Wharton, Swain, Short, Steen Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3Y.2ADI/1432 Message Board Post: Seeking information on Joanna E. Smith (16 April 1843 DE-9 March 1916 Georgetown Hd., Sussex Co., DE). According to her death certificate she was the daughter of Alexander & Martha (Wharton) Smith. I found the marriage of Alexander Smith and Martha J. Wharton which occured on 24 May 1842 in Sussex Co., DE. Joanna Smith (aged 7) was listed in the household of a Levi Smith (aged 65) of Nanticoke Hd on the 1850 Census of Sussex Co., DE who may be her grandfather. Also in Nanticoke Hundred in 1850 was a John B. Swain (1823-1902) who married a Martha Smith on 30 Sept. 1845 also in Sussex Co., DE. Does anyone know if Martha was born a Smith or a widow? Could she have been Martha J. (Wharton) Smith, widow of Alexander Smith? The 1850 Census gives her age in 1850 as 29 or about 2 years older than her husband John B. Swain. Martha was apparently deceased by ca 1870 when John B. Swain married 2nd a Priscilla ______. Joanna E. Smith (1843-1916) married Leonard Short (1839-1909), son of Edward & Hetty Ann (Steen) Short of Dagsboro Hundred, on 2 January 1861 in Sussex Co., DE. Leonard & Joanna had issue; Thomas E., Laura Frances (Dickerson), Ida H., Georgia Ella (Hitchens), Harry Lee, Sarah Catherine, Columbus Henry and Harvey H. Short. Any information on these families would be most appreciated. Thank you, Parker Todd http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~carolines/

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3Y.2ADI/1431 Message Board Post: George may provide some link between two Hastings lines of mine- one on the paternal side and one farther back on the maternal side. George is listed in Barren Creek in 1920 but I can't find him in the 1880 Wicomico or the 1900 Somerset, leading me to believe that while it says he was born in MD according to the 1920 that he may actually have been born in Sussex County. George holds the mortgage on two (Hastings and Mumford) properties in the 1920 census, neither of which seems to be Goslee land, ergo I suspect that he has a familial connection, especially because my great grandmother Hastings on my paternal side is Alice Goslee and my great great grandmother Mumford on my maternal side is a Hastings.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: DAVIS, COLE, LAWLIS, HUDSON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3Y.2ADI/1400.3 Message Board Post: I've done some digging on this Daniel Davis because his wife was a daughter of my ancestor (the mother: Sophia Poynter Hudson Cole). So far, no evidence that he was related to the Robert Davis family, the Hart-Davis crew, Matthias Davis, etc. Some 6 Davis families went to Monongalia and Marion-Harrison counties WV from southern Delaware alone. Daniel and Lurana(h) (Hudson) Davis were married in 1785 not 1781. After Daniel and Luranah married they settled on land adjoining that of Coverdale Cole; the sale deed explains that the land Luranah and her mother inherited was considered conjoined with Coverdale's then Coverdale and Sophia set off to Daniel and Luranah a piece composed of parts of the two parcels for a farm. Thus this Daniel Davis had no land records independent of this parcel, and where he came from is quite uncertain. There is no ground for stating that he was b. in DE, in MD, in PA, in VA, or for that matter in Ireland. As yet: unknown. There were several individuals named Jehu Davis in the Monongalia Co. area before 1850. Sometimes their records have been transcribed or indexed as "John". Researching 'em requires "up close and personal" looking at original records, and considerable caution.
